I meant to do this for the other seasons but uh, they were not fresh enough in my mind so we're starting here!
Anyway! Just finished season 5, and I will say I found a knew appreciation for it. I never disliked it or anything, but I don't think I realized how funny it was lol. Not that it doesn't have it faults, I think it wasted a lot of time doing things that result in net zeros for the progression of the plot. And a lot of character arcs were not fully realized. Don't even get me started on Ronin's whole schtick (ninjago once again ruining a good thing). Or Pixal's jarring nonexistence throughout the whole thing.
HOWEVER that's not the focus on this post! I will be putting my oppo related thoughts under the cut cause I suspect this will be a bit of a long one. Enjoy!
So, first of all. Really good season for core 4 moments all around. Everyone got at least one little moment with one another. Zane is still written like a real character. And I- just for a brief moment- got the appeal of lava (for legal reasons this is a joke). I think the lack of Lloyd in the team dynamic really opened the floor for everyone else to shine (RIP Lloyd).
They writers still seem to be pairing Kai/Zane and Cole/Jay off as duo's most commonly. Which means opposite gets quite a few scenes together. This season beats seasons 4 oppo moments count, by just the sheer virtue of having Zane actual participate in the plot. I also noticed a lot of glacier moments, though obviously not the focus.
This season continues the trend of Kai and Zane standing next to each other like. All the time. It's like their favorite thing is standing next to each other. There's a scene when they're on their way to the tomb of FSM where Zane and Cole are in the front seat and Jay and Kai are in the back. And then at some point during the action sequence Zane swaps seats with Jay. This is obviously a blocking/animation "error" of some sort, but I'm choosing to make it gay for obvious reasons.
There's nothing super significant here, unlike Rebooted or ToE. Though I doubt we're ever gonna get anything that tops "He powered me" ever again. But there was lots of smaller stuff that added up and made this season fun to analyze. I'd say the most significant moment for me is from episode 8. Which everyone in the fandom knows as [Cole screaming] Sunday. Though whether this is because of it's meme status, or because it was actually that significant is debatable. Either way it was enjoyable for me, they should make Kai and Zane fall on top of each other more.
If i had to put this season on a relationship timeline, I'd say we're still firmly in the crush stage. My typical writing arc has Zane just starting to realize he might like Kai non platonically here, whereas Kai has known since Zane's death in season 3. They're just starting to feel each other out again and get back to being as close as they're implied to be in previous seasons. Pixal is of course fujoing out as is her right.
To be honest I expect this to be the last gold mine for oppo moments for quite awhile. The core 4 as a group does not get a lot of focus like this again until season 9. And from what I remember Zane doesn't do a ton in Hunted. So we'll see where we end up by the time they get there.
