- Premise -
The first story is focused in the country of Ethelia, dealing with the aftermath of a civil uprising and how people have lost faith with their King, choosing to leave Ethelia to join the Crusades in an endless fight in a desolate country across the sea for a chance at glory. What starts the story is a big mystery surrounding an unknown campsite filled with dead bodies and a strange black-haired survivor who may prove to be a vital witness, unravels into a plot to seize the throne of Ethelia, assassinate the two princes and pave the way for a third Yragan invasion. While many of the key questions about the events will be answered within that story, many others are not. For instance, why is Yraga so determined to conquer Ethelia? What was the purpose of that campsite before the men within were slaughtered? Just how powerful are the Fangs of Alcerion and what is their true purpose?
Subsequent stories will travel across the world, with new companions to be found, alliances forged and broken, betrayals that cost lives, betrayals that save the day, secrets, conspiracies and hidden truths buried for generations.
- Story -
In the Winter of 1078, a Castleguard Captain for the town of Peaton by the name of Castowen Daine is overburdened by his hunt for a Monster that has evaded them for three months and grown stronger with each passing Athyric Moon. If Monsters are not dealt with quickly then it is customary to call in the Fangs of Alcerion, whose reputation is one of callous upheaval to deal with problems with efficiency and with no care to the mess they leave behind. At only 24, Cas is young and inexperienced for his position but makes up for this by overworking himself to the limit. On the trail of his Monster, Cas takes his team of younger trainees to gain some experience and help him with the tracking. It is one day before the Athyric Moon and time is running out. As Cas and his team travel between the River Credna and the vast Knightswood, a sudden discovery puts them all on edge. Seemingly overnight, a campsite sits unoccupied a short distance from them. There are no banners, no colours and most chilling of all, no signs of life. Upon getting closer, Cas discovers a significant number of corpses piled into corners of the tents. One of the corpses, a younger man wearing finery belonging to a Lord or even High Lord, sits bound in a chair. Like the others, he is dead, but he died after being tortured. What troubles Cas most is that he cannot place the young man at all and cannot think of any relative of a local Lord that would have a son or nephew as haggard as this man appeared to be. Cas is quickly brought back to reality when one of his trainees discovers a severely injured man hidden away in a small cave tunnel that followed the Credna. While this poor soul seemed too far gone to help, Cas went back to the tents to search for any other signs of life and found the crumpled form of a strange woman in black. The woman awakens suddenly at Cas approaching and seems to say something in a foreign language, showing a flicker of recognition when looking over Cas. The mysterious encounter is cut short as a Monster attack on the camp leaves Cas and the three trainees scrambling to their feet.
At the same time, Cas’ younger brother Conoric Daine has been recruited by the other Captain of Peaton Castleguard, Elric Dorne. The two set off just after Cas to look into a missing person and discover the unfortunate remains of the local woodsman; a man with no enemies or friends to speak of, murdered and then hidden from view and left with three other corpses killed around the same time. The corpses, clearly not meant to be discovered, would have been corrupted by the Athyric Moon a few hours later, bringing about a fresh wave of strife for the towns and villages neighboring the forest. Not to mention distractions.
In the middle of Cas and Conoric’s grim discoveries, another layer of mystery is added on top of everything. The manor of Highton was attacked during the night and many of the residents fled into the neighbouring town of Walbury. The Peaton Castleguard Commander, Ser Galter Beadby, happened to be in the area and helped one of the survivors of attack get to Peaton to safety. The survivor was Lady Luisa Sutton of Braisley and Hickel, and she had been staying in the manor of Highton at the time of the attack. Her fiance, Ser Danan Rowe, is currently missing and she fears that her brother, Emiel Sutton, a former Blackthorne loyalist currently on the run, may have been involved in the attack. In the middle of trying to figure out the campsite, the woman in black, the attack on the woodsman and track down the Monster he has been searching for, Cas must somehow also find a missing noble and possibly a renegade rebel as well. With all of this going on, rumours of the Fangs of Alcerion closing in on Peaton also begin to circulate.
Together, Cas and Conoric find themselves swept up in a bid to find out who or what is threatening Ethelia and fall head first into a tangled web of lies, secrets and war.
- Characters -
Castowen 'Cas' Daine
A former bandit-turned-honourable lawman who pushes himself to extremes to prove that he's more than his past. A champion of all black sheep who takes on too much, Cas is no well-liked by the higher ups in his order.
Conoric Daine
Quiet and reclusive birdkeeper at the same Castleguard where his brother serves as Captain. Conoric carries a gloomy aura with him wherever he goes, even when he's not in a bad mood. Introverted but no antisocial, Conoric is a supportive force who truly cares deeply for others, he just cannot express himself clearly and openly.
Gwynnen Revnell
A monster hunter and lawman who is painfully chipper at all times and definitely a morning person. Born to luxury but from a now-disgraced noble family, Gwynnen makes his way in life doing low-class, low-paying jobs. He fails to see how advantaged he is here and doesn't like excuses. A pretty face can activate his Turbo Chivalry.
Hughwen Shelbourne
A scoundrel who proudly wears his deceitful reputation. Snarky, snide and mean to cover up his massive persecution complex. He is always doing shady things but playing the innocent party. Someone who acts like both a victim and aggressor but is shocked when his act lands him in prison.
Sarabonney Glennish
A country bumpkin herbalist from a big family in a small village. Always doing too much but don’t you dare try and help her. Frequently. covered in mud and grime but don't be a baby if that bothers you! Once she starts talking, she steam-rolls over all other words, even her own.
Fryszka Forlassi
Buoyant, frivolous and utterly devoted to having a good time. God put her on this earth to experience joy and spread it! Insecure, needy and whiny when things don’t go her way, Fryszka is every bit the joyous teenage girl she is. Fashion focused and very dedicated to good hygiene!
Dońalos Rićhail aka. 'Pentos'
An aloof shut-in who lives for his studies. Richail is a haughty, obstinate linguist, historian & botanist and his alias of Pentos actually means “I was thinking” which was the off-hand & rude reply he gave when being asked for his name. This snotty response earned him the nickname and it has stuck. He has been known to take out a sand-timer to prevent others wasting his precious time.
The world has a lot of history, depth, cultures and magic that shapes the countries in different ways. I have a lot of fun exploring different ideas and how values, rules, taboos and traditions would change a community or country's outlook, desires and laws. I hope to get back into this when I can LOCK IN properly.
Sketches FOR MY STORY YAY
So Deia is the least thought out character, she might go through a ton of changes, plus it’s her ~10 years before the plot. She’s human, Gaelic roots maybe? And her family has magical books and all, they can perform magic too, she’s one of the stringest in a few generations.
Eric my beloved, ~150yo, head of the Blanchard family, albino, has an equally beautiful daughter Rose. Their family is kind of ex knights, aristocrats
Maria is from the second vampire family, has a brother Manuel abd uncle Phillipe whos the actual head of family rn. They have the biggest hotel in town - “Cuervo” just like their surname. And have a beef with the Blanchards
The following thought has probably been formalized by some literature theorist somewhere... I fully subscribe to the idea that once the piece of art / the story is out of its creators hands and into the world, then their authority over it ends.
Of course I'm not saying that they can't enlighten us about things we may have missed. They can, and it's very nice. But if it is in the book/show/movie, that is to say if what happens in canon can indeed be interpreted that way, then a fellow audience member can spot it and enlighten us just the same.
And if isn't there, it isn't! It's just something they like to imagine, or wanted to do, or thought they were doing.
Same thing for writers, actually. Either your intentions got translated onscreen or they didn't. If they didn't, they're not part of the story.
(now of course we can also disagree about what is or isn't actually portrayed onscreen, but my point is that the creative team, once the show is out, doesn't have more authority. and so we shouldn't really get in a tizzy about what they say...)
