when I started vet school, I was one of the youngest students. I had just turned 21.

in my class, the oldest student started school at 47. the class average age, at the beginning of 4 years, was 28. the average age at graduation was 32. more than half my classmates had done another career, some just for a year or two, others for 15 or more, and then returned to follow their dream.

in the class 2 years below me, the oldest student started at 53. he was a human neurosurgeon who decided he wanted to be able to take those skills to dogs.

you are not to old to change your life. it might be hard, it might take time, but living is hard, and time is inexorable, and who knows what joys await? who knows how you might be fulfilled, what friends you might make, what you will learn about yourself?

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

i honor of xue yang’s birthday i thought id share my personal version of how xxc finds out his friend’s true identity (i probably won’t write it ever. you know how it goes. but it’s important to me that it’s out there)

i’d really love for it to happen during a night hunt. they’re pursuing some particularly nasty monster and at some point it turns ugly. and dangerous. so much that xxc can’t keep up anymore. he’s quickly finding himself in serious trouble, desperately swinging his sword at the beast, he even falls down to the ground. and xy sees it. only he can’t really help him with whatever small knife he’s got for a weapon, so without thinking he does the only logical thing.

he pulls out jiangzai in all her two-bladed beauty and fights the monster himself. and it feels so good to not hold himself back anymore and be himself in a fight. he’s missed this even more than he thought. (bonus points if he used demonic cultivation on top of everything.)

of course he absolutely obliterates that poor evil creature. he doesn’t even quite notice what he’s doing until it’s over, only realizes how great he feels and how alive. maybe he’s a little out of breath when he comes to a halt in front of xxc who’s still sitting on the ground and hasn’t moved one inch since xy started his spectacle.

he and shuanghua recognized him, of course. immediately. and while xy laughs “all clear, daozhang” (he hasn’t quite grasped the situation yet) xxc is just sitting there like.
