"Wild" Premieres December 5th!
During the rainy weather in Arcata over the Thanksgiving weekend, we spent some time at the movies. The trailer for "Wild" was featured prominently . . . momentum is building for this Friday's (December 5th) opening. Given that anticipation began several years ago, the expectations will be mountain high for "Wild". Initial reviews on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes are very encouraging but the real test may be from those of us who have walked the trail. Does the movie feel authentic? Does it capture the trail experience?

Reese Witherspoon delivers her best performance since she won the Best Actress Oscar for 'Walk the Line' a decade ago.
From an interview after the film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival:
Reese, what made you want to make the film?
Witherspoon: (She first read the book on a plane to New York): "I called my agent and said I just read the best book ever. I have to call this woman and tell her I have to hug her."
In her first phone call to Strayed, Witherspoon said "This is the most beautiful story and if you will trust me, I want to make this into a movie."
Witherspoon: "I've seen the movie seven times and I can't control my emotions.'
Vallee: "I look for a beautiful, emotional story. Choosing a film is like choosing a lifestyle. For two years you are going to work and live this story. I try to find stories that will make me happy to be of service to the story."
Nature is like a character in the film. But you can't direct nature like another character. Were there times that was a challenge?
Witherspoon: "At the very beginning, the national parks shut down the day we were starting to shoot. The government shut down. We were in a panic. We had to shuffle locations."
Witherspoon: "We were filming hot desert scenes, but Oregon's October was incredibly cold. Here I had goose bumps, but it is supposed to be incredibly hot."
IMDb reports that the film was shot in these locations:
Bend, Oregon
Crater Lake, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Vancouver, Washington, USA
PCT veterans will notice that the Kennedy Meadows scene wasn’t filmed on the actual PCT (the PCTA website suggests that it was at LaPine's Paulina Lake Lodge). Little of the film was actually filmed on the PCT.
Come Friday night, opinions will be shared. Let me know your review of the film.
