So, onion seeds are known to lose germination rate very fast; they're supposed to germinate for one year after you get them, and then their germination rate plummets. Knowing this, I had collected lots of onion seeds from one big old onion plant in my garden, and I tried very hard to grow them last year. I however, flopped. For some reason my baby onion plants would die off very young, and only few of them managed to actually get transplanted into the garden. The ones I transplanted also seemed to die off, and I thought almost all of them were dead, until I found a few leftover bulbs while cleaning my garden in the fall; I left them in the soil, in hope they would grow for the summer.
But this meant I would have to, once again, wait for an onion plant to go to seed, which takes 2 and half years, then collect seeds, grow them for another 2 years until they actually become onions, and all in all, I would go years without actually having onions because I refuse to buy them from the store, or buy the little bulbs you can plant in the garden. I want onions grown from seed!!!
Even though the seeds I have are now 3 years old, and supposed to be kinda useless, I still planted bunch of them in one pot, with very little hope that any would germinate since they're too old, but look!
They're coming out! It's not too late! My 3 year old onion seeds still have some germination power left in them! People are lying about this!
And I am so attached to this right now, because, I haven't been using actual onions in making food for years now. I would use garlic, or spring onions, or chives, just whatever to replace the onion so I could still have somewhat tasty food, and it was okay, it was fine, I thought my food tasted okay. But then, when my last roommate disappeared, she actually left behind a little bag of onions she never used. I stored it carefully, and then started using them in dishes. And I couldn't believe how much better every single dish suddenly was. I didn't even realize. Onions bring in sweetness. Onions are sweet! They're so luxurious and sweet! And I didn't even know how much I missed this until I had it again.
I'm down to 2 actual onions and just looking at my little baby onion pot with hope and yearning in my heart, I want this to work out so badly. If anyone has tips for growing onions from seed please share. I heard somewhere you need to start them in January, so I did, but they only grew into little bulbs very late into the fall, so I assume there's no time to have them grow fully in just one year. So I have to start them from seed every year and have it be successful if I want to have onions 2 years in the future. It's not an easy feat! But I know it's worth it. Onions are worth it.
