The types are so different that scientists are debating whether they should be split into separate species. One thing they all have in common is the vital role they play in their ecosystems. Southern Residents (SRKW), Northern Residents (NRKW), or lettered pods (such as J-Pod) are all resident. The Offshore are the newest to be identified and the least studied to date.
