It's #FunFactFriday and June is #OrcaAwarenessMonth! Southern Resident killer whales are the best studied group of cetaceans anywhere in the world and may be some of the best studied animals, period. Since the 1960s researchers have been learning as much as possible about the lives of these whales including increasingly specific studies of population numbers, social dynamics, acoustic behaviour, prey preference, predatory techniques, and range distribution - to name only a few. They are some of the only animals we know of to concretely display social learning as many of their behaviours are passed on from mother to calf through generations. A matriarchal species, calves almost always stay with their mothers, regardless of sex, for their entire lives. June is #orcaawarenessmonth! Transient Killer Whales were renamed Bigg's a couple of years ago in honour of Dr. Michael Bigg whose research changed the way we look at these animals. Bigg's Killer Whales are significant less picky than their Resident cousins when it comes to prey, they hunt marine mammals-everything from small seals to whales twice their size! They are also frequently found in much smaller groups than Residents and their family bonds do not appear to be quite as strong. It's #FunFactFriday and #OrcaAwarenessMonth! Did you know Orcas can be found in and around every island in the Galapagos year round but they are very unpredictable? They are always seen in small groups, never larger than 10 individuals, and frequently spotted alone. They seem to be generalist hunters, preying on anything from sea lions to turtles to rays to fish.
