It's #FunFactFriday and June is #OrcaAwarenessMonth! Southern Resident killer whales are the best studied group of cetaceans anywhere in the world and may be some of the best studied animals, period. Since the 1960s researchers have been learning as much as possible about the lives of these whales including increasingly specific studies of population numbers, social dynamics, acoustic behaviour, prey preference, predatory techniques, and range distribution - to name only a few. They are some of the only animals we know of to concretely display social learning as many of their behaviours are passed on from mother to calf through generations. A matriarchal species, calves almost always stay with their mothers, regardless of sex, for their entire lives. Tremendously picky eaters for such a large predator, SRKWs survive primarily on a diet of Chinook salmon.⠀ Photo by @vitalocean⠀ #whaletales #whales #SRKW #killerwhale #orca #juneisorcamonth #whalemonth #killerwhalesareawesome #whalesareawesome #whalewatching #storytelling #JPod #KPod #LPod https://www.instagram.com/p/BysqSOYFVv8/?igshid=vmq65xxw9jow
