🍎 🍏 Idunn 🍎 🍏

Aesir goddess of youth, married to the skald poet, Bragi, and daughter of the dwarf Ivaldi and the light elf Hildigunnur. She is the is the keeper of the golden apples that gift the gods with youth and immortality. Her role is especially important considering if the gods go without the apples for too long they will begin to age rapidly. Idunn is so highly regarded amongst the gods that she is regarded as “the eternally loved.”

Frigg, Queen of the Æsir and goddess of the sky is Odin, the All-Father’s, one true wife. She is gifted with the power of foreknowledge, and is the deity of fertility, household, motherhood, marriage, and domestic matters. Frigg’s devotion and protectiveness for her family, and specifically her children Baldr & Höðr, mirror the promises made on my own wedding day. I feel a connection with the All-Mother as I fall into domestic life and begin my journey into motherhood. May she watch over me and my family, always.

In honor of Earth day, 🌎 I will share with you the tale of the creation of Midgard...

Ymir was the ‘first being’ of Norse Mythology, and the ancestor of all mythical creatures. Ymir was born when the fire from Muspelheim and ice from Niflheim met in the abyss of Ginnungagap. Ymir is both male and female, and therefore, was able to birth the first generation of mythical beings asexually. Three of Ymir’s defendants Vili, Ve & Odin slayed the First Being, and then created the earth and cosmos from the corpse. The blood became the seas and oceans, while the bones made up rocks and mountains. The hair was used for trees, while the skull was transformed into the sky and heavens, with the brains making up the clouds. And finally, the eyebrows were fashioned into the Midgard – the ‘middle realm’ of mankind. More commonly known as Earth.

Odin, the All-Father, holds the highest status of all time the Norse deities. He is their leader, as well as the god of the heavens, poetry, battle and death. Odin is a descendant of the first being of Norse Mythology, Ymir, and along with his brothers Vili & Ve, he slayed their ancestor and shaped the world from his corpse. The All-Father made an even greater sacrifice, when he gouged out his own eye in order to have a drink from Mimir’s well to gain, in part, it’s wisdom. Odin owns several grand creatures including a proud eight-legged stallion named Sleipnir, and wolves Geri & Freki. Of course, there are also Odin’s ravens’ Huginn & Muninn, who fly all over Midgard to learn information to share with their master. Odin’s weapon of choice is a spear, called Gungnir. The spear was designed by Loki, forged by the dwarves of Alfheim, and never misses its intended target. The dwarves also forged an enchanted golden arm band, called Draupnir, which drips eight more gold bands from itself every 9th night.
