So I moved to California less than a week ago from the midwest and I’ve never experienced wildfires. I saw them burning up an entire mountainside. The air here smells like a campfire. Please consider contributing to some relief funds for those affected

There’s something really, really strange about watching the US unravel from a distance.

I don’t know when I will be able to visit the place I grew up again

I don’t know how much of it will be left and how much will be ash

10% of Oregon has evacuated due to wildfires.

My childhood home is okay for now but the fires are closer and more severe than ever before. There will be big stretches of burnt ground in the surrounding area next time I see it

Part of me wonders if there will be a next time

I don’t know when the pandemic will be contained enough to allow travel

I don’t know if the next fire will be closer and destroy big parts of the town I grew up in, or even my childhood home

It’s all so unreal and I cannot imagine what it will be like if I return

i cannot overstate how fucking terrifying the oregon fires are right now. the sky is a sick yellow-gray. I can’t breathe without getting dizzy and an incredible pain in my head, and i’m on the other side of portland. i’m chronically ill, as is my mom, and this might do some real damage, i’m scared. the pictures are a gut-punching inferno, 3200 acres - thirty two hundred, that’s thirty two hundred-acre woods, and that’s terrible - like my brain can hardly quite comprehend that all of that is fucking on fire currently, my family went on a road trip like 3 weeks ago and it was fine, and now it’s all burning, and thank god i have an air mask because i actually cannot breathe without it and a lot of people don’t have that, and all this fucking smoke and fire on top of the current political also-a-garbage-fire, a garbage fire the entire country wide...

like... shit. I wrote a book about this because it is honestly one of my worst fears and it feels like it’s coming true.

so i know we’re all freaking out about hurricanes (and rightly fucking so, holy shit) but. keep us in mind okay?

These photos are from this morning, September 5, 2017. I live on the edge of Gresham, and there is a layer of ash on everything from the Columbia River Gorge fire. The ash on my hands is from just a couple minutes of wheeling my wheelchair in the courtyard of my apartment complex. So far, this fire has burned over 4,800 acres and is destroying many of our most scenic spots, people's homes, & natural habitats for wildlife. It's dangerously close to Multnomah Falls. It has jumped the river and crossed into Washington State. People in Troutdale, OR are at a level 1 evacuation. The air quality is awful in all areas spanning from the gorge, Troutdale, gresham, portland, and even Washington. There are already wildfires burning in Central Oregon and Southern California. This new man made fire has made things so much worse for the Pacific Northwest. This is absolutely awful. I can't stop thinking about it.
