Doin‘ the splits
Plant of the Day
Tuesday 2 September 2025
The flowers of this clump-forming perennial Veronica spicata (spiked speedwell) were contrasted against the bright yellow foliage of Origanum vulgare 'Aureum' (golden oregano, golden marjory). The latter is a reliable woody-based perennial herb forming a spreading clump of wiry stems with fragrant leaves and pink flowers. Both plants need a sunny, free-draining location.

“Common oregano”
Overall pretty great depiction of common oregano. It’s an introduced species in North America, native to Eurasia and the middle east.
The leaves are appropriately simple, spaced alternately along the stem, but lack the more defined venation often present in real life. Compliments on the flowers, too; they’re accurately depicted as umbels with darker pink bracts below the light pink flowers, with a protruding stigma and styles. While somewhat lacking in definition, if you look closely you can see the three lobes on each cup-shaped flower, characteristic of this plant’s family Lamiaceae. I wasn’t able to get a good enough look in-game but it doesn’t look like this rendering shows a square stem, another characteristic of the Lamiales.
What’s interesting about this plant is its relative obscurity at this time in this part of the country; though lacking a specific date of arrival, it was introduced with settlers from europe but stayed localized in cultivation around the east coast, where italian food was popular with immigrants. It wasn’t cultivated widely until WWII soldiers returning from italy brought demand for italian food to the forefront of american cuisine. But that’s a whole other story. The fact that Arthur can collect these all over the map at this point in history is a bit anachronistic unfortunately.
My rating: 6/8
Possible nettle beeb!! I’m not 100% sure since it doesn’t hurt to touch but maybe the babies don’t have stingers? This was one of my group sowing planters for seeds of unknown viability so multiple things can pop up.
The other plants are Origanum rotundifolium and Schizanthus hookeri.
Time to break the sausage fest. Requesting for Oregano and eyes pretty please.
not majorly about her eyes but also this was the funniest way possible to request something and then followed by a character as minor as Oregano? you’re amazing thank you. I’ve only written her once out of self indulgence I’m happy to have her back

“Oregano, I’ve got work for you.”
You pushed Oregano’s door open, stepping into her room with little steps to ensure you didn’t drop the carefully arranged paperwork you held.
“Thank you.”
Once you got her door shut with your foot, you faced her. You weren’t sure what to expect, but goodness, she looked tired.
You quietly set the stack of papers down on her desk, and she mumbled her thanks once more. But when you didn’t make a move to leave, she looked up.
“Have you taken a break today?”
She was quiet before smiling a little sheepishly, her head tilting, blonde bangs falling across her forehead. “Truthfully, I haven’t, not yet. It’s been a busy day.”
“Do you want any help? This was all I needed to finish for today, so I’m free.”
“No, I’m alright. I don’t want to take up your hard earned free time.”
Oregano stilled when you leant forward, reaching out to cup her face in your hands. You tilted her head to the opposite side gently, before carefully taking her glasses away from her.
“You look like you really need a break, you know.”
Oregano hummed low in her throat, reaching up to rub at her eyes. She blinked a couple times, while you rounded her desk to look for a cloth to clean her glasses with.
“Perhaps… I didn’t think I was working so much.”
She turned in her chair, looking up at you once you’d finally cleaned her glasses, and you were just as careful in sliding them back into her face as you were taking them off.
You smiled, holding her gaze. “Come with me to get a drink and stretch your legs.”
Although she looked tired, her eyes twinkled at the offer, and she nodded once. She stood with your held, holding your hand firmly in her own, allowing you to tug her behind you and to the door.
“Alright. Thank you very much.”
“Of course. It’s my pleasure.”
