I chose Narcissus as a flower for Graves for many reasons. Nor only for the obvious one, since I envision Mr. Graves being narcissic in a,way (not in a sociopath and toxic way, of Course) but also because the symbolism of this flower is much more complex than a man whose in love with his own reflection. Narciss both means ambition and selflessness, spring and fertility and death and deadly sleep, purity and lust, chivalry and vanity. So I thought this ambigous flower might suit Mr. Graves the way I see him as a character.

Summary: The first thing Percival Graves does after being released back into the world is buy a new wand. He's at Greymalkin's for ten minutes and the only wand that works for him is raw aspen, whiter than bone and so rough that Graves gives himself a splinter conjuring a storm of birds. The wand—dragon heartstring, a most unusual wand for an American wizard, according to a flustered Greymalkin—feels wild, and Graves empties half his wallet on the counter and keeps his hand on his new wand all the way home. 

The second thing he does is quit his job, because honestly. 

("Grindelwald did his research before he put on your face," Seraphina says reasonably. "And it's not like you're open with your personal life. He has us all fooled." 

"He wore scorpion stickpins!" Graves shoots back, somewhat less reasonably. 

Seraphina looks at Graves, his pressed creases, his immaculate shirt, the red ruby cufflinks he's wearing to hide the starved brittleness of his wrists. "I'm sorry," she says. It is not enough to make him stay.) 

The third thing he does is get jumped by Credence Barebone in an alley.

Guys, Grindelwald has only been in New York as long as Newt

The first scene in the movie shows the back of Grindy’s head (before he takes Graves’s form) and he attacks 5 Aurors. According to the screenplay, this scene is somewhere in Europe e.i. not New York

The interesting part that isn’t made explicit in the movie is this attack happened the night before Newt arrived in New York because

scene 2 (which is Newt arriving in New York) is set the very next morning. 

Grindelwald arrived in New York around the same time Newt did. (possibly on the same boat, even...?)

So this means

Grindelwald attacked and stole Percival’s identity sometime between his attack in Europe and ‘Mr Graves’ at the obscurist disturbance the next day.  

The amount of time Grindy spent with Credence is dramatically reduced, compared to some other theories I have read. 

Also brings back the question as to why Grindelwald took Graves’s place and not Tina’s...

Credence living with Original!Graves and they're sleeping next to each other and every night just before he falls asleep Graves has these immense sleep twitches and every time Credence gets so startled he almost starts to cry and Graves has to spend like 5 minutes calming him down

Grindy New York case

So there’s been news floating that Grindelwald was in New York only for several days. To be exact, he arrived to NY around the same time Newt did. This means few things, as a lot of people has already pointed out, such as the fact that Graves must have known Credence before whole Grindelwald shit happened, that actually Grindelfuck spent very little time with Credence (I’m really not the first one who noticed, as,fast as I find post about this I’ll drop a link to them, to properly give credit to those, who inspired me to writing this). Yes, in that case all this is true. But… I just can’t help this terrifying feeling, that it makes Graves survival chances even lower than ever. It’s something I’ve been really thinking about a lot. I liked to think of Grindelwald as of a this kind of sick bastard, who loves to play with his food before he eats it. Which means, if he impersonated Graves for a long period of time, he very likely would keep real Graves alive, as his toy. To torture him, torment him. Abd that is kind of heartbreaking thought, but at least it gave me some reassurance that Graves at the end might survive all this crap. But right now? If Grindelwald was in such hurry, he didn’t have time for playing around. Didn’t have time for toys. He didn’t care for a long-term consequences. He didn’t have time to take care of hiding place for his toy or to make sure Graves wouldn’t escape. And probably killed him on the spot. Easier to take care of the body, which can’t run away or attack you than living breathing human being. Or Grindelwald really is fucked up bastard and sadist above all (sorry, kind of my own headcanon, might be very far from actual character) and even having only a couple of days he decided to have some fun in between his evil plan. And that would mean Graves is alive… My head is spinning, I don’t know what should I think anymore… Oh, wait, I know… I SHOULD BE STUDYING!!!
