While everyone is celebrating their own way, Monsta X’s Haewon releases a letter that gives us a sneak peek at what she’s experienced from her debut with the group to present day.

“When I first started training at 18, I never imagined that this is path I would travel down. With my seven brothers at my side, I've been able to discover a whole new side of me that I never knew existed and find a place in a family that I thought didn't want me. I send out my love to my family, blood related or not, as they have given me the strength to endure everything from day one. In the past four years, I have grown not only as a performer but as a person. 

“I was terrified the day I was told that I would be joining Monsta X. The boys had just wrapped debut promotions a week before they met me. I was set to debut with my sisters in Cosmic Girls, but fate decided otherwise and gave me seven brothers instead. Like most siblings, it took them a while to accept the newest sibling but we got there in just under a month.

“When I debuted with them, I suffered a lot of backlash and negativity from the online community and I wanted to leave. The boys worked through so much to debut, it was definitely unfair for me to be added. However, they remind me everyday that I belong and it means the world to me. Especially during those early promotion days when they never left my side.

“I’m the eldest child in my family, so to be treated like a little sister was a new experience for me. The boys protected and cared for me when I started to doubt myself during those days, and they still do. I love them with my whole heart and nothing will change that.

“To Monbebe...Though we got off to a rocky start back in 2015, thank you for giving me a chance! I never told you all this, but Cosmic Girls was my last chance to debut as I promised to train to take over my father’s branch of business at 22. So you can imagine my panic when our CEO pulled me out of training. I thought that was it for me, and that I’d be stuck in a desk job for the rest of my life. Monsta X is and will always be my home.

“Four years, several tours, hundreds of performances and fanmeetings, and thousands of Monbebe that I love with all my heart. These are just a few of the factors that make up my perfect life, and it’s all because of all of you, Starship, and Monsta X believing in me. I love you!”

Haewon even wrote individual letters for her group mates that they read on their anniversary VLive. Whatever was written moved each of them close to tears. Though Wonho was the only one who actually cried, pulling her into a hug and not letting her go the entire stream.

It’s so heartwarming to see that the group loves their little sister as much as she loves them!

J.I.’s Elimination

It’s always hard to say good-bye...

Nine years.

He spent nine years in training. He gave up his adolescence to accomplish the dream he and sister reached for. Now, it was all over.

The group stood in front of JYP, their hearts almost beating out of their chests. He had already spoken to the others, leaving Junghwa for last. The eldest member knew that this wouldn’t end well for him as the man had been quite honest with everyone.

“Junghwa,” the boy’s head shot up, “you looked confident and had one of the most stable vocals today.” Junghwa bowed his head in thanks. “However, I’ve reviewed some of the rehearsal and recording footage, and you don’t seem to communicate with the others.” All eyes went to the eldest. “Care to explain that to me?”

“Well,” he stuttered out but couldn’t find any words.

JYP sighed and flipped through the papers in front of him.

“If you cannot give me a reason then this may not be the group for you. You will return to the trainee dorms tonight. Dismissed.”

No one really wanted to move or speak, fearing to break the silence around them. Some feared that they’d cry along with him. Most of them didn’t know what to do. From the beginning, they knew that they may not make it as ten, but they never suspected the first to be Junghwa.

As JYP left the room, Junghwa processed only one body attach itself to his side. Looking over, he spotted Jisung with his face buried in his shoulder. Junghwa placed his hand on the boy’s head to gently push him away, but he wouldn’t let go.

“Come on, bud,” he whispered in fear that he’d cry again. “I gotta go.”

“No,” Jisung whined, “you belong here.”

Carefully shifting their position, Junghwa pulled him away and gestured for Chan to take him. He gave the leader a sad smile and a pat on the shoulder.

“You take care of these boys, okay? They need you as much as you need them.”

It was if time was moving in slow motion as the boys watched as he walked out of the practice room. Everyone was trying to hold back their tears, some failing as some streaked down their faces. Losing Junghwa was like losing a brother.

Returning to the dorm alone, he remained silent as he packed everything away again. His clothes and basic needs were loaded into a suitcase as his decorations were packed in boxes. Some of the extra crew helped him take them to the front door as he scanned the room once more.

It was bittersweet, but this is where he decides no more. His strength to continue his training was low, his heart was weakened. He wasn’t strong enough, not anymore. Setting down his final box, he grabbed his phone and dialed an all too familiar number.

“Jackson?” A sleepy voice asked as it answered the phone. “Is everything okay?”

“Hey ma,” he sighed, “is my room still ready for me?”

Haewon’s Relationship with MX

Shownu & Haewon (The Fox & The Bear)

Shownu didn’t know how to talk to her at first, feeling some bitterness towards her when she was first introduced to the group. During her first month with the group, he was barely speaking on terms with her. After a chat with her during a sleepless night, the two started grow closer after he started to treat her like a member of the team. Slowly but surely, their relationship became one that was like a father and daughter. 

She’ll go to him should she ever have a nightmare, finding herself safe at his side

Both of them will playfully bite at each other if they try to steal the other’s food

Wonho & Haewon (The Fox & The Rabbit)

After Haewon suffered an ankle injury during RUSH preparations, the two had a heart to heart while waiting to be picked up from the hospital. Wonho admitted that he was nervous to approach her as he believed that she was scared of him. She assured him that she wasn’t scared, just nervous, since they didn’t really talk during their initial meeting and believed that he despised the company’s choice as well as her. Eventually, they came to understanding and started to grow as friends.

She calls Wonho her “gym buddy” since he’s the one most likely to be there at the same time

Both of them are really soft, but play into the fox-bunny relationship where she’ll play-bully him at fansigns

Minhyuk & Haewon (The Fox & The Hound)

The two didn’t start talking until they were the only ones scheduled to record vocals one day. Haewon was having some trouble with the harmonies proposed and shyly asked him for help. Pushing aside his feelings from their first meeting, he helped her and discovered that she was really trying. He helped her more the following days and discovered they had more in common than he thought. As time went on, their relationship grew to that of annoying siblings or the Two Terrors of Monsta X.

Though Haewon is considered one of the ideal children in the group, if she’s paired with Minhyuk, chaos is sure to follow

The two have a playful relationship, earning the name “the Fox and the Hound” since they act like the cub and pup from the film

Kihyun & Haewon (The Fox & The Hamster)

It wasn’t until Kihyun overslept one day that he realized how much Haewon did to help him around the dorm. Breakfast was already made and the rest of the boys (yes, including Hyungwon) were up and about when he walked out of his room. He ended up bonding with her after asking her how she got everyone up earlier than normal, realizing that she had knack for this type of thing and always asks for her help if she’s the first one up after him.

Kihyun is always amused when she lectures the other boys over the simplest things back in the dorm

Designated as the “moms” of the group, the two are able to take charge away from Shownu when they work together

Hyungwon & Haewon (The Fox & The Turtle)

After recovering from her ankle injury, she asked Hyungwon to help her catch up on the choreography that she missed. Hyungwon agreed to help, Kihyun’s voice ringing in his mind to get to know her. They spent most of the day going over the dances and getting to know one another, taking it slow due to her ankle. The two of them spent most of the following week practicing and learning more about each other, becoming a pair of siblings in the process.

Haewon has said that though Hyungwon is the hardest to wake up, he’s the one she wakes gently

Monbebe love Hyungwon’s protective nature over Haewon,and how he defends her from the others’ teasing actions when they become too much

Jooheon X Haewon (The Fox & The Bee)

Jooheon distanced himself from Haewon until he found her crying in the living room after the others had gone to bed. He did his best to cheer her up, but she could barely speak. He stayed with her until the short hours of the morning, both of them falling asleep in the living room. He realized that she didn’t want to be thrown in to this situation and became one of her closest friends.

Haewon has admitted that whenever Jooheon directs an aegyo to her, she gets all cringe-y, and prefers him to just be himself and not force it as he’s naturally cute

These two are the King and Queen of duality in the group, sweethearts offstage and demons onstage

Changkyun X Haewon (The Fox & The Wolf)

Knowing what Haewon was going through, Changkyun took her under his wing when she arrived. She went to him every time an attempt to talk to the others didn’t end up happening, finding safety in his company. They are the closest and have the best chemistry out of the entire group. 

Changkyun was Haewon’s “rap mentor” when she first joined the group before she settled in as a vocalist, dancer, and visual

As the kids of this little family, Monbebe love seeing the two cause chaos for the hyung line at fansigns and livestreams

Haewon & Monsta X (A Queen & Her Knights)

All in all, she looks at the boys as her brothers. She holds no animosity towards the boys after the way they treated her. The past is the past, and she would prefer to leave it at that. The boys treat her like their princess every chance they get, reminding her that she is well-loved. They hate to look back at how they acted when she first arrived, loving every memory made with her so far and looking forward to the ones to come.

When the negative comments came for her after RUSH, one of the boys was constantly at her side to cover her ears, close social media, switch to a different subject, or defend her as well as to remind her that those days would pass

As the shortest and lightest member of the group, all of the boys have a habit of picking her up and carrying her on their shoulders during concerts, fansigns, and/or in general; she says that Shownu has the best shoulders for her to be carried on

Growing Close Pt. 7 - Changkyun aka Haewon’s First Day

Haewon sat in a conference room, her new manager was telling her about the group she'd be joining. She tried to fake excitement, but he could tell that it only made her nervous. So, he stopped and took a seat next to her.

"I know that it's scary," he said, "but I've seen what you can do. The boys will love you."

"It's not that it's scary. It's that I'm questioning of this being a good idea," she said. "The boys went through a war of a show to debut together, and now they decide to add me in. Doesn't that seem unfair?"

"Tell you what. If you ever feel uncomfortable, you tell me and we handle it together, okay?"

"Okay." - Half an hour later, the boys entered the practice room. They found a girl dancing along to their debut track. She seemed to be nailing it, almost no mistakes in the portion they saw. She turned, saw them, and ran over to turn off the stereo.

"Sorry, were we intruding?" Shownu asked.

"Uh no," she said, "just killing some time."

When she didn't leave the room, Wonho turned to their manager. He didn't tell the girl to leave, but greeted her and told the group to sit on the bench. - Ten minutes later, everyone was processing the new information. Haewon sat off to the side, nervously chewing her bottom lip. She didn't like the faces she saw. Six of the the boys looked over at her from time to time, the last one didn't even spare a glance.

"Haewon," the manager said, "come here and introduce yourself."

She stepped up to his side, her hands gripping her sweater hem tight.

"Hello, I'm Gyeon Haewon. It's nice to meet you."

None of the boys wanted to look at her, except one. That boy stood up and held his hand out to her.

"Nice to meet you, noona. I'm Lim Changkyun, but I go by I.M on stage."

She took his hand, a bit of uneasiness melting away. The slam of a door brought her attention back to the others. Two were missing and the other four didn't want to look at her. Changkyun pulled her close when he saw this.

"Don't worry, they were like this with me," he assured. "They'll warm up to you by the end of the month."

"Really?" She released his hand and looked up at him. "How can you be so sure?"

"If I wasn't sure, I'd still be in your shoes." - Changkyun pulled Haewon out of the room to get away from the stares and bad energy. He told the manager that he'd take her down to the cafe while the others had a talk.

"Look, don't take how they act to heart," he told her. "Much like me, it's because there's feeling of betrayal. Not from you, from the company."

"It's because I'm backpacking, isn't it?" He shook his head. "You don't need to lie to me. I knew it was a bad idea from the minute they told me. You guys went through so much to become a group. You don't need a little girl to join the group."

"You're not just some little girl. You are someone who deserves her spot. Why else would the company have you join us?" Haewon looked up at him. "You have promise."

"Do you really believe that?"

"I know it. And trust me, you'll have them wrapped around your finger by the end of the month." - That night, the boys arrived at their new dorm. The boys were assigned to share a two rooms while Haewon got her own. She had already moved in the other day, hiding in her room when they arrived. Their stuff would be moved in tomorrow while they were at practice.

Changkyun knocked on her door, labeled with a handmade sign that bore her name. She opened the door and peeked out.

"Can I come in?" He asked. She looked around and saw no one with him before opening the door. Changkyun looked around and took note of the empty shelves and blank walls. "You gonna decorate?"

"Maybe," she answered as he sat at her desk. "I don't want to feel at home when this may not even work out."

"Do you really doubt yourself so much?"

"I didn't until the company pulled me out of training to put me in a boy group of all things. I thought they were going to tell me that it wasn't working out and that I had to find a different company," she admitted, collapsing on her bed. "I've been rejected from other companies before Starship, so it'd be hard to find another. It's not exactly an esteem builder."

"Well, I hope I made you feel a little welcome," he smiled. "We're going to be stuck together for a long time."

"I don't think you understand," she chuckled. "I'm not stuck in here with you. You're stuck in here with me."
