Unattainable Love

“You must really love him."

Beck is startled out of his musings at the soft voice of his best friend’s fiancé. He tries to fake a laugh.

“Of course I love him, he’s my best friend.” Her gaze is all too knowing and he sighs. “I would never get between you two. Yours and his happiness is all I wish for.”

“The worst part about this,” she says after greeting some guests that pass by, “is that I believe you, but he’s more happy with you than I could ever make him.”

His breath gets caught in his throat and he feels like throwing up even as hope rises, threatening his resolve.

“He wants you,” he snarls, then stalks away, muttering under his breath, “have a good night.”

Normally he doesn’t drink to deal with his problems. He recognizes the crutch, the problem it could become, but tonight is an exception and vows to tell his therapist about the incident regardless. He wants to linger, wants to drink at the bar near his friends, wants to vent. But he knows that will make things worse so he walks to the liquor store, buys himself a bottle of limoncello and as he waits for an Uber, starts guzzling the drink.

Later he reads stupidly cute stories online and imagines a world where he falls in love with someone else who loves him back and eventually falls asleep with a spinning head.
