Found along Orion's sword just north of the bright Orion Nebula complex, these reflection nebulae are also associated with Orion's giant molecular cloud about 1,500 light-years away, but are dominated by the characteristic blue color of interstellar dust reflecting light from hot young stars.

The Orion Nebula is about 3 million years and roughly 1344 light years away. When dinosaurs roamed the Earth 65 million years ago, this nebula wasn’t even the sky! This photo is full of red and pink hydrogen-alpha as well as interstellar medium, the gas and dust between stars. The Orion Nebula & Running Man | M42 & sh2-279 - Providence, RI . Taking old data and reprocessing it with newer techniques to bring out more detail and clarity is a very satisfying (and potentially frustrating) experience. This is data that I took that I was not able to combine with other data without a lot of weird artifacts. This led me to just processing it and leaving it be. Going back, I was able to keep the core muted more while brining out more dust and color. All processing here was done with Photoshop, using DeepSkyStacker to stack the data. . First imagecis starless, next with stars and lastly an inverted image. . M42, the Great Orion Nebula, and to its left the bluish reflection nebula known as The Running Man, NGC 1977. This is one of the images I took with my “short” telescope out dark sky camping a week ago. However I had forgot one crucial cable which meant I could not use my auto guiding system so instead of taking five minute exposures I had to take a lot of 30 second exposures — 3.75 hours worth.
