Brought out the telescope the other night and was instantly and beautifully reminded just how big this universe is, how small we are, how perfectly tiny and fragile in the face of so much night. Stuck my silly little iPhone up to the eyepiece and snapped this photo and felt a wash of overwhelmed gratitude for this life, and was reminded of my favorite scene in my favorite movie, Joe Vs. The Volcano, when Joe, on the edge of death, looks to the moon and says, “Dear god, whose name I do not know, thank you for my life. I forgot how BIG, thank you. Tips for photographing the moon with your smartphone:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • Try during daylight, when there's less contrast between the Moon and the background!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • Set the exposure as low (dark) as possible. On Android phones, you set the exposure by tapping on a bright object, then dragging up and down on the dotted bar that appears, and tapping the lock icon to hold the settings.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • If you want to attempt a photo of the Moon during nighttime, set your camera's focus and exposure on a distant, brightly lit object, then pan over to the moon.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • Use HDR or night mode, if you phone has it.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • Zoom in as much as you can: even if your phone doesn't have optical zoom, it might help you to get a lower exposure if more of the screen is filled with brightness.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ • Moon photos will always be better with optical aid! For those of you who may not know, I recently changed my major to Physics and Astronomy. For my birthday on Tuesday, my parents helped me buy a telescope, #oriontelescopes 4.5" Starblast reflector telescope. Tonight I went out and tried it. There is a lot of light pollution on BYU campus, but I was able to find a relatively dark spot on the hill by building 7. I looked at a lot of things, and here I have pictures of the moon and Jupiter that I took with my phone camera using a 3d printed phone mount. It was so cool to see all the things I could see, even with the cloud cover. I could easily see magnitude 6 stars, so I hope to be able to see other things, like Uranus, in the coming days. Here the cloud passed in front of the moon and it looked really cool, so I took a video. What do y'all think? Thoughts on the major change? Thoughts on physics or astronomy? Telescopes? Best Moon shot I've gotten with my phone camera yet. Switched out to the 25mm eyepiece with the 13% Moon filter.
