Obatala

Obatala head among the Orisas. Obatala represents the introduction of light into the Yoruba cosmology which is referenced in Eji Ogbe (first Odu) as the light that creates existence. Obatala is a contraction of Oba Ti Ni Ala which translates to King of White cloth.

Obatala  as part of the most primordial has a androgynous expression, they have atunwa’s or avatars both male and female in expression. This is Oshanla, her feminine expression. Traditionally she is depicted as old with trembling hands. She represents the sound mind, who prefers silence and peace. She is one of the faces of the Iyami.
