Ormonde Jayne Frangipani

Nose: Geza Schoen

Notes: lime, linden, magnolia; frangipani, water lily, plum, tuberose, rose; musk, vanilla, amber, cedar

This does what it says on the tin: it's a lush, substantial tropical floral. Exactly what I want on a hot summer day; it wafts clouds of swoony fragrance all around.

There's a rather firm/steely green note in the opening which I find deeply pleasant.

The "plum" is done with a light touch; it's just a slightly fruity richness that heavily overlaps with some facets of tuberose.

The floral heart is sweet, buttery, and sort of "coral-pink" in tonality. It's not a standard white-floral effect, it's warmer and fruitier. It feels like one of those ruffly Johanna Ortiz dresses with big floral patterns. Exuberant in a well-behaved way.

Stays pink and buttery all day. I can tell right away that I would get sick of wearing this on a daily basis, but I can imagine a die-hard girlie-girl enjoying it.

Nose: Geza Schoen

Ormonde Woman goes on both spicy and green, in the subtle, textured, blurred way that is Geza Schoen’s signature. The spice gives it something of a hippie-essential-oil feel; the green is from hemlock, which smells very fresh and realistic, like a hedge cut from a coniferous shrub, in the spring when the needles are pale-green and tender.  The overall impression is low-key, natural, yet luxe, like a spa or hotel in a forest.  There’s just the right amount of Iso E Super to make it feel “slick” and polished, without feeling outright chemical.

I get a little of the sweetness of the amber right away, and more as the minutes wear on. Mixed with the forest-green, it’s sweet in an unusually clean way, like tree sap, or like good soap.

Ormonde Jayne has excellent, cohesive art direction -- everything of theirs I’ve smelled so far is understated, tasteful, yet original.

Ormonde Woman doesn’t really feel like “me” -- it’s somehow both too warm-earthy and too clean. It belongs to someone who’s less of a loudmouth and more of a supportive listener with a professional’s reserve.  But I respect the Ormonde Woman when I meet her, and I hope she finds this scent.

Ormonde Jayne Champaca

Notes: pink pepper, bamboo, neroli; champaca, freesia, rice; myrrh, musk, green tea

Ormonde Jayne Champaca is a light, sheer scent based around the tropical white flower known as Magnolia champaca, said to be the tree under which the Buddha achieved enlightenment.

The flower has a swoony, tropical, narcotic, almost fruity scent, but here it’s treated in an ethereally fresh and subtle manner, with clean green notes in the opening, and a dry green-tea background hum, as well as some milky toasted rice in the heart. This is actually as much a rice scent as a champaca scent. It makes me think of a shady tropical verandah.

Deep in the drydown there’s a spiced, sticky note that I assume is the myrrh, making this into a mild floral-rice-pudding dessert.

It’s all very polite, and I can usually take my white florals quite a bit bolder than this; I’d love to try a full-bodied, epic champaca fragrance sometime, with all the nectar-dripping indoles intact. But I can’t really call Ormonde Jayne Champaca “boring” either. The sticky rice note is unusual, as is the green tea; there are no cliches here.

This would make a really great bridal fragrance, I think. White florals have the kind of lush femininity that goes well with the one day in your life you’ll wear a poofy dress, but this one is light and transparent enough not to offend a crowd of guests.

Ormonde Man opens with a wonderful woodsy scent; conifers, cardamom, and what I’d swear is incense. It’s cool, green, spicy, and I find it utterly entrancing. Smells like a cabin in the woods.

It’s lubricated with a bunch of ISO E Super, which makes it liquid and transparent around the edges. Usually I find ISO E Super harsh and overdone; Ormonde Man feels like a masterclass in how to do it right, as a glossy clear aura around the other notes. Perfumer Geza Schoen famously loves ISO E Super; I was afraid that would mean his perfumes were faketastic mall-smell monstrosities, but no; he makes it shimmer and reflect like liquid light.

The longevity is pretty poor; three hours in it’s very faint, just a cardamom/pepper dark buzz against the skin, plus a slightly sweetened cedar base. The pepper is a little bit nose-burning; I’m not crazy about pepper-dominated scents, and that’s where this is going. But if you aren’t bothered by the burning/prickling sensation, it’s rather elegant. It’s like heathered charcoal gray under layers of translucent glass.

While it’s nominally a masculine, I think it comes across as unisex. It’s a sleekly modern exemplar of the “smoke and forest” genre of perfume, which in my experience lots of women are into. The performance is kind of disappointing, but might be a feature if you want a sheer scent that won’t offend.

With Ormonde Man we’re in the Geza Schoen Zone and it’s lovely. Cooling misty conifers and gin-clear juniper berries, with a sharp peppery-woody humming backdrop.

Within half an hour the refreshing green top is gone and it’s all subtle woods, lots of gray-brown vetiver and cedar, with a sleek transparent layer of ISO E Super on top. There’s a spicy hint of something like sandalwood keeping it cheerful.

Restrained, elegant, contemplative, and truly lovely. Masculine-of-center but fine (if a little austere) on a woman. If you like Terre d’Hermes but find it a little blah, get yourself over to the Geza Schoen Zone and enjoy the sleek modernist woods and forest greens.
