A Masterpiece Reunited: The Vasa’s Småland Soul
History is not just preserved; it is brought back to life through the hands of those who respect the old ways.
When you visit the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, you are standing before a relic of the 17th century, a magnificent testament to Swedish naval ambition. Yet, the ship’s stunning stern castle, once battered by three centuries on the seabed, owes some of its current grandeur to a delicate, painstaking collaboration with the master craftsmen of Orrefors, Småland.
Back in 1990, artist Eva Fidjeland took on the challenge of recreating the ship’s windows. To honor the original 17th-century craftsmanship, she hand-crafted eight leaded, mouth-blown glass panes. These were not mere factory reproductions; Fidjeland meticulously recreated the specific refractive qualities, subtle color variations, and natural irregularities of period glass.
The result? Windows that do not merely sit upon the ship but belong to it, allowing light to filter through the stern exactly as it might have when the Vasa was first launched.
The Details:
Location: Orrefors, Småland
Artist: Eva Fidjeland
Pieces: Eight arched, leaded windows
Technique: Mouth-blown glass, historically informed reconstruction
Eva Fidjeland’s work with the Vasa is a perfect example of how the modern artist can serve as a bridge to the past. While her portfolio is vast—spanning sculpture, poetry, photography, and digital art—her dedication to the technical discipline of stained glass remains one of the most visible marks she has left on Swedish cultural heritage.
Whether she is crafting ritualistic glass sculptures or capturing the natural world through her lens, Fidjeland’s work is characterized by a deep reverence for texture, light, and the enduring human spirit.
If you find yourself in Stockholm, take a moment to look closely at those eight windows in the stern. That is not just glass; that is a piece of Småland’s heart, keeping watch over a legendary ship.
