It's around this time of year that I normally start work on preparing new software images for deployment over the summer. Given the current pandemic, I — like so many others — have moved to working from home Using a laptop with VPN and and RDC I can access the tools necessary to put together packages and compile the image sequence. The challenge is — how to actually test OS deployment when the distribution point servers are only available behind that VPN.

I think I've come up with a solution:

Initial tests are promising. A work laptop brought home for testing connects to the router, since it sees the SSID it's expecting, and it is able to access firewalled resources as though it were physically on campus.

Многие согласятся, что использовать Windows Server на ноутбуке в качестве основной операционки совсем неудобно. Конечно, можно максимально приблизить интерфейс сервера к windows 7  и даже включить возможности Aero, но это совсем не то. Хочется получить отдельно клиентскую систему и отдельно windows server для демонстраций. При этом нет желания устанавливать разные операционки на разные разделы, виртуализация тоже не желательна, ноутбуки, конечно, стали много мощнее, но вот производительность жестких дисков в них по-прежнему невелика.

В windows 7/Server 2008 R2 есть очень любопытная возможность, загрузка с виртуальных жестких дисков.. да, именно загрузка операционной системы с одного vhd файла.  Что это значит? В момент загрузки с виртуального диска, загрузчик работает с vhd файлом, который был ранее создан в Hyper-V или Virtual PC, и на который была установлена ОС. При этом оборудование не эмулируется (как это происходит в виртуальной машине), а используется реальное железо. Иначе говоря, можно полноценно использовать мощную видеокарту.

Что даст ИТ специалистам возможность загрузки с vhd? В первую очередь повышается гибкость системы, теперь изменять эталонный образ операционной системы стало совсем просто, достаточно загрузиться с диска в Hyper-V, внести нужные изменения и выключить систему. Больше не требуется захватывать WIM образ с эталонного компьютера. Развертывать системы тоже стало легче, можно просто скопировать нужный vhd на клиентскую машину используя Windows Deployment Services.
