New features coming to BlackBerry
Many reporters will claim that RIM are standing still and way behind their competitors. Some of that may be true in some respects but today Blackberry have proven that there is more in store and available to some almost immediately.
The Blackberry 7.0 devices are great, I said that the 9900 was the best Blackberry yet and I still believe that. In fact, I still use my 9900 as my daily phone so whenever I hear of further developments I take a little more interest than normal.
Ofcourse with CES on, everyone is announcing something and RIM has been no exception. They have introduced OS 7.1 which in a name suggests a minor update however when you look at what the new features are, other manufacturers would release a whole new device and throw an "S" on it.
Here is what users can expect in OS 7.1:
Blackberry Tag: Remember the NFC video I did recently (here)? Well Blackberry Tag is going to allow us to use our NFC enabled Blackberry's to share data such as contacts, web links, and files.
Wifi Mobile Hotspot: This feature has been in Android phones for a long time, even in iOS devices and finally it comes to Blackberry. This allows up to five users to make use of the Blackberry's internet connection. There is a difference though, one which I am looking into hearing more from the carriers about. I'll get into that later (below).
Enhancements to Blackberry Travel which helps you plan, book, manage and share travel experiences
Improvements to BBM that allow for extended profile customisation
Blackberry Maps becomes more social offering special offers nearby
Blackberry FM Radio, kinda self explanatory.
The above updates will be different country to country and also different dependent on the carrier. The WiFi Hotspot feature is unique in a way to Blackberry because of the way the data plan is setup with the carrier. If I own an Android device, I have a data allowance, 4GB for example. If I hotspot it regularly then I am likely to use it quickly and receive extra charges.
With Blackberry data plans though they are unlimited! So if I am able to hotspot the device will I then have unlimited downloads from my laptop? Surely the carrier wont want this. My guess is similar to tethering from the Playbook via Blackberry Bridge (I explain that here). I believe that the hotspot will only allow you to share "mobile data" which is a different data plan to the separate BB data. Which will cost you money to bolt on.
I hope that I am wrong and in fact we are able to use the BB data on the hotspot but we shall wait and see.
Either way, I'm excited!
