Kloktober 2023 Day 7 - Missing AOTD scene

They'd let him get too close. They'd been so focused on Nathan's injuries - serious injuries, enough to have downed the vocalist - that none of Dethklok had noticed one of Salacia's fanatical devotees creeping close, machete in hand, raising it in preparation to strike--!

CRACK!

The would-be assassin, sporting a new fist-sized hole in the center mass of his torso courtesy of the buckshot that had ripped its way through him, collapsed onto the snow with a soft thud, dead. The four still-conscious members of Dethklok wheeled around to determine the source of the gunshot. There on the ridge were two familiar figures: Nathan's mother and father. Rose, her entire five-foot-two frame trembling with maternal rage, still held a double barreled shotgun leveled, ready to fire another round if their attacker dared to show any residual signs of life.

Over the cacophony of the battle raging behind them, the band could just make out her battlecry: "Not my baby you don't, you bastard!"

Would have LOVED to see the parents in the final battle! Could totally see them all cresting the ridge, holding various makeshift weapons. They might not always be the best parents or easiest to get along with, but no one - NO ONE - touches their babies, dammit!!

3/10: Mutilation Monday

This one is special. No prelude.

"Thank you," Oscar cooed. Nathan was babysat by a friend of a friend only once and found out that the world didn't end if he didn't wear a seatbelt, and he kicked his mother in the jaw avoiding it. Luckily, she didn't let it slide, but he suddenly needed a re-orientation to getting in the car. Today, he put his seatbelt on by himself.

On the way out of the neighborhood, Oscar vamped the itenerary for their afternoon. "We're going to go by the factory, then the store, then the park," which was an impossible stack of tasks only five months ago, but, finally untethered to a diaper bag and its financial constraints, Rose and Oscar were driving Nathan anywhere he could stand to go. Which was everywhere.

"So what do you think?"

Oscar smiled into the rearview mirror and only got green eyes looking back at him.

He might never talk.

"Well," Oscar chirped, "I'm excited. You're gonna meet some of the guys I work with."

They arrived to the massive parking lot and entered a huge, plain building. After crossing a 4'x6' doormat, the paint ended and the factory floor began, flanked along the plant wall by offices, some with walls and some without. Oscar held Nathan's hand as they walked down the row to a wall-less cubicle with Oscar's old photos from deployment, some pictures of Rose at Palm Beach covered in seaweed for the hell of it, and several pictures of Nathan, from a wiggly pink blob to looking sour at a portrait studio. He was told he couldn't have any more candy until they took the photo. The sound of machinery dominated the space, but it's like Nathan didn't even notice. He was too busy trying to stuff his pockets full of starlight mints from a bowl on Oscar's desk. "Nathan, put them back."

"... fine. You can have one. Just one."

"Thank you. Great job putting them back."

Seriously. He got better every day. Oscar led Nathan through the floor with his arm around his shoulder until they got to a manager touring around the perimeter of the plant, where rollers fed long, thin sheets of bright silver metal into cutters. A man nearby continually checked the machines and continually shoved his sleeves up his arms. The machines always turned, and his sleeves always fell down. Nathan stared while he fought his fight over and over and over.

Oscar stood above him with the manager, talking and talking and talking.

"So this is Nathan?"

"Yep, just came out to grab my W-2s."

"Well, nice to meet you," the man extended a hand towards Nathan, and Oscar gave Nathan a tap on the shoulder so he'd at least look at it. And, he did. Then, he turned back to guy, who was now juggling pushing his stupid sleeves with trying to clip a pen to his coveralls, not realizing that he was rubbing it over a seam, not a pocket. Oscar smoothed Nathan’s flyaways.

The manager looked offended, but Oscar mouthed something and shook his head until the other guy acted like he understood.

"How's Karen? Rose said she hasn't been around the garden club much these days."

"Yeah, well, you know her. She hired a landscaper to take over her garden to pursue her new passion... Aerobics."

"Really?"

"Yeah, aerobics. Eight weeks of classes, now she wants to shape up and become an instructor. The kids think it's silly, and she's about as coordinated as a damn baby deer, but..."

"At least it's something to keep her busy."

"Yeah. She whines about being bored, but doesn't want to go to work. Me, I don't give a flying--"

"Fuck."

A small voice under Oscar's hand spoke, flat, firm, and enunciated. Then, the crunch of the man's pen rang out just about the time he realized his sleeve was caught in the roller. He got out one lousy cry for help before his fingers were folded in all directions into the machine, then his wrist, then his arm. The manager went running. Oscar gagged, Nathan didn't look away. Then, Oscar grabbed Nathan's hand and hurried him away, Nathan dragging all the way. The blood ran over the clean, sparking sheet, then dripped to the floor. About half of the sound of motors dissipated but the screams volleyed through the hollow space.

In the parking lot, in the handicapped parking space, Oscar got down on one knee to look into Nathan's face and had nothing to say.

For a moment, at least.

"Are you ok?"

Sometimes, Nathan would nod, and he did. Oscar lunged forward for a tight squeeze. He wished the CCTV around the plant would catch audio, or else him and Rose would have been double lucky to get Nathan finally talking on tape.

"I'm so proud of you."

I think old dad rock/metal absolutely reaches the smallest and "disgustingly mushy" (his own words) parts of Nathan and reminds him of hanging out with his dad as a little boy. I can imagine whenever he regresses to cope with a panic attack or other symptom of his C/PTSD, an old nostalgic tune earworms him outta nowhere. He hums along, it's grounding enough that he's able to find someone who makes him feel the same way falling asleep to his dad's cassettes did. Usually he finds pickles, but if he can't and Nathan isn't trying to self sabotage by convincing himself he'll be bugging anyone, I bet he searches for charles. He's got a mental hierarchy of people he can "bug" with his regression

Smallklok aside I like the idea Nathan can sing normally, but also the possibility that he got super fixated on growls/fry's when he was young and it's the only technique he learned. AS AN AUTISTIC NATHAN TRUTHER !!! I think he hums as a stim, not to communicate (I'm also autistic and "hum" a lotta mhms/mm-mms whenever I can't talk) I also think metal is undeniably a SpIn of his 🦈🦈

YES!!!! YES YES YES 100% YES! I am a big fan of dad rock/metal because it reminds me so much of my dad and it makes me happy whenever i listen to it. God, I love Nathan using music as a way to help himself drop and be little and ground himself because despite it all, Nathan does love and dad very much. Even for a military man, Nathan loves hanging out with his dad and bonding with him and playing with him. He just really loves his dad and he makes him feel safe. His dad was also the one that showed him the meat packing factory where Nathan said his first word. He is an important person to him. And getting little while listening to that music makes him feel all those "mushy" feelings all over again. Like being in the car and Nathan is sitting in the front seat and his dad plays the "Who sings this?" game with him and covers up the dashboard. That probably started Nathan's love for music and appreciation in the art because his dad probably showed him so many bands and people and knew bunch of little facts about different bands. AND YES, NATHAN TRYING SO HARD TO NOT SELF SABOTAGE HIS REGRESSION! AND PICKLES AND CHARLES BEING THE TWO PEOPLE HE FEELS LIKE HE ISN'T BUGGING IF HE NEEDS TO BE GROUNDED! They both would play the "Who sings this" game with him and let him guess and sing and share their little facts about the bands.

LETS GO AUTISTIC NATHAN NATION RISE UP!

You know that one meme of a girl going, "I love hearing my boyfriend scream in the shower." and then she follows it up with like, "MY BOYFRIEND IS A SINGER IN A METAL BAND!" That would be Rose to Nathan when he was a teenager and he would be practicing in his room. Rose would brag about him to her lady friends around the town and he would be so embarrassed (but also mildly happy that he's getting good enough to brag about.) I like to think that if Nathan hums to stim, he also hums to verbalize when he goes non-verbal. It could include the normal yes and no hums but it also includes like little chirps or hummy notes or repetition to show that he is happy or show that he is upset or sad. But Nathan humming as a stim has me thinking about Toki using Nathan's humming vibrations when he lays on Nathan's chest as a form of white noise.
