a/n: this was so fun to write omg! sorry if it isn't exactly what you had in mind, i added a bit of a best friends trope into it
you’re lying on your bed when the door flings open. you don’t even have to look up to know who it is, the low, tired voice murmuring move over more than enough.
oscar piastri. your best friend. the only person you were okay with showing up to your apartment uninvited.
he’s got the hood of his hoodie over his head, energy drink in one hand, and you’re already shifting to make room for him on your bed.
“rough day?” you ask as he sighs, burying his face into your pillow. “you’re insane for managing an early morning lecture after a night out.”
“i’m not insane,” he mutters, eyes shutting. “i’m responsible. focused on my studies.”
you reach over, snatching the drink from where he’d left it on your bedside table, “whatever helps you sleep at night.”
he turns his head, cracking open an eye to look at you.
“and what’ve you been doing the whole day?”
“nothing,” you take a sip, smiling. “like anyone would do after coming home at four.”
“so you’ve been rotting in bed?” he tilts his head up, gaze flickering down to your bare legs, the cutoff of your shorts, then finally back to your eyes again. “seems unproductive.”
“sometimes that’s a good thing.”
you hear him scoff out a laugh, eyes shutting again.
you and oscar had always been close.
close enough you fell asleep on his shoulder. close enough he remembered things your past boyfriends hadn’t. close enough you felt as if you constantly toed the line of friendship. he’d brush stands of hair out of your face with the casualty of blinking, get you your favorite drinks for no reason at all, collapse on your bed right next to you like he was now.
that’s the way it’d always been.

“what?”
“you look good,” he’s not looking at you as he says it, his voice as neutral as ever. “for someone who’s spent the day doing nothing.”

“nah,” he moves, the hood falling off his head, brunette hair splaying across his forehead. “just the truth.”
your bed isn’t exactly spacious, and when you lean back into the headboard, your leg knocks against his. he doesn’t tense at the touch, doesn’t move away to try make more space. he merely stays there, like you could get as close to him as possible and he still wouldn’t move an inch.
you weren’t sure what that meant. you weren’t sure what to make of what the two of you were. you weren’t sure if you should even address it at all.
you’re too lost in thought to realise he’s looking at you now, eyes half lidded and yet as seeing as ever. he’s staring with the kind of look girls would obsess over. the kind of look described in books, in movies, in those over-exaggerated love stories you’d hear on social media.
and you let him. you let him compliment you, let him tug you close during parties, let him fall asleep beside you with his arm around your waist.
he’s still staring when you turn to him.
“do you mean that?”
“mm?” he blinks. slowly. “that you look good? yeah, ‘course i do. you’re the only person i’ve ever actually found attractive.”
“seriously?”
“seriously,” he smiles. “you always look good. even when you’re hungover.”
“don’t lie to me,” you laugh, and he moves again, head resting on your lap. “no one looks good hungover.”
“you do,” you try ignore the way he’s being so sincere. “always.”
it hits you then. the way you’ve got oscar piastri, one of the most likeable people on campus, lying on your lap like he belongs there, and yet you’re not doing anything about it.
“hey, osc,” you look down at him, and his eyebrows raise. “are you…”
“yeah?” he prompts, and you trail off, biting the inside of your cheek. “am i what?”
you aren’t sure what you’re trying to ask. it might’ve been are you in love with me? or, are you going to that party friday night? either way, he was still waiting, giving you his full attention like he always does.
“nothing,” you say, glancing away. “unimportant.”
“you sure?”
“i’m sure.”
he doesn’t push it. neither of you push it. deep down, you have a feeling he knows what you’re about to ask, even if you’re not so sure yourself.
“we’re friends right?”
you feel him tense.
“i’m…not sure.”
“yeah,” you tilt your head back, sighing. “me either.”
more than friends, less than a lover.
and that was the way it’d always be.
It had all started when Nicole Piastri spotted you in the local grocery store. You were pushing a trolley, with two children beside you. A boy and a girl. Both in school uniforms, both arguing over something trivial as you put things into the trolley. “Can you two act like civilised humans? For once?”
“But mum! He’s wrong!”
You barely turn your head, handling it with practised ease. And then Nicole’s brain switched on. Mum? You were a mother? “Evie, it doesn’t matter. Chips are chips.”
“But salt and vinegar are the best!”
And then the boy chimes in, “Nah uh, honey soy chicken!”
You put something else in the trolley, “They’re both good. Now stop arguing or I’ll put the ice cream back.”
And they went quiet. Mumbling out a small ‘sorry’ each. You keep moving down the aisle, pausing to grab things. Evie almost bumps into Nicole, “I’m really sorry!”
“It’s okay. No harm, no foul.”
She watched the second your back straightens before you turned around with a smile. “Hi.”
She smiles back, “Been a while, hasn’t it?”
You nod, “Seven years.”
“Are you doing alright?”
“Never better. You?”
The boy tugs on your arm, uncomfortable, “No complaints. I didn’t know you had kids.”
“Like I said, it’s been seven years. Lotta things change.”
“They sure do.”
Things had changed. Lots of things. First, Oscar was off around the world being a superstar. Living his dream. Second, you were stuck in the same place with two kids, and a job you hated. You’d grown. Matured. No longer the 17-year-old Nicole was so accustomed to seeing in her living room. Now you’re 24, with two kids. Different hair. Different clothes. Different makeup. Different everything. The two kids you had with you were newish. The boy had shaggy blonde hair and a wicked tan, brown eyes, shark tooth necklace. If Nicole would guess, a surfer. Which meant you didn’t live in Brighton anymore. If she remembered correctly, it was your dad’s birthday or something soon. That would be why you were back here, obviously straight after school pick up.
“You still live ‘round here?”
“No, Mornington. Dad’s birthday, stayin’ in a B&B, needed food.”
So she was right. You’d grabbed the kids and made the two hour journey right after school. She turned her attention to the little girl. Brown hair, eyes that matched yours. She looked similar to Edie when- Oh my god. “How old are they?”
You pause before saying, “Seven.”
And then you turn quickly and head for the checkout. Seven. Born in 2018. You and Oscar had broken up in August that year, when he was already back in England for school. Nicole quickly followed suit. She had to tell Chris.
When you and Oscar were thirteen you met at school, it was February of 2014. You were new, and he had been assigned as your buddy. That was that. End of story. Two peas in a pod. By 2016 he was in England, and your boyfriend. Would you ever recommend a long distance relationship at the ripe old age of fifteen to anyone? No. Absolutely not. But you managed it. The next year things started to fall apart. You two convinced yourself when he’d come home over his summer holidays (winter) that everything was fine. It was not. You argued. You made up. Over and over again. When he left for school you held out a little longer before he called it. A week later you were telling your parents you were pregnant. By twenty you’d found a small little house in Mornington, and your parents had agreed to help you pay for it. So you and your two little toddlers packed up and left for two hours away. That was that. End of story.
Oscar had come home during a break, Nicole didn’t even notice her son sitting at the kitchen table with his sisters. “Chris, you’ll never believe what I just saw at the store!”
Chris shakes his head, “I’m sure I will believe it, Nicole.”
She pauses, putting the shopping bags on the counter, and looking over at Chris again, “Two adorable little children. One of them looked a lot like Edie when she was young. Seven year old.” Oscar furrows his eyebrows, letting his mum continue, “Haven’t seen their mum since winter of 2017. Used to sit on our couch and watch movies, curled up under a blanket with one of Oscar’s hoodies.”
