Real “Diversity” In Hollywood

Tonight is the Oscars, and the major topic this year is the lack of diversity with this year’s nominees. It certainly brought attention with the hashtag #OscarsAreSoWhite. Here is my personal issue, the lack of diversity in the media is focused on black people, but what about all the other races?

As an Asian-American who loves Hollywood movies, it is hard to see the treatment Asian and Latino actors being “typecast” for their race or cast all white actors for a movie based on Asian or Latino culture. I’m disappointed casting directors and movie companies don’t believe other races cannot score “box office” movies! I can’t even recall the last time an Asian or Latino won an Oscar for a lead role! What annoyed me even more was the media saying there was more diversity at the SAG Awards than the Oscars. Yes, the SAG Awards had “diversity” because it featured lots of black winners, but I don’t recall any Asian or Latino winners that night. That’s the problem with Hollywood today, and it is not their fault. Since the early days of film, Hollywood is known for casting white actors and actresses. We, as society, are used to seeing white and black actors in film and television to the point it becomes unusual casting other races in an American movie.

My plea to Hollywood is, start casting Asians and Latinos not because of our race, but because of TALENT. The more “diversity” in movie, the better chance we might one day see all races at the Oscars.

Clearly, she has received the message about how outrageous this year’s Oscar nominations have been. Michael B. Jordan was Creed, right? Samuel L.Jackson was on top of his game as usual. I already ranted last week about the lack of recognition for the work of @idriselba and #willsmith.

Oscar noms 2016

I have to admit my energy for the oscars this year was low with no major BC film in the running for Oscar noms.  Last year was so exciting.  But again this year although there were many strong, strong performances by Black Actors and Actresses, all of the nominees in the acting categories are White.  What is up with that? Idris? Every time that man is on screen we are seeing a Master Class.  Will Smith? I thought this was one of his best work in Concussion. He delivered a very nuanced performance.  No nom for See You Again?  I can go on & on.   When will it stop?  It makes you want to keep your money in pocket and not go to the movies, but we need to be sure to support the artists we love, no matter what.

#OscarsAreSoWhite is more than a hashtag..

It's funny how when African Americans are nominated for an Oscar, it's when they play a character portraying a typical stereotype. Example(s): Halle Berry ( the ONLY woman of color to EVER win an Oscar) won for playing a prostitute in Monster Ball back in 2002. Mo'Nique Imes-Jackson was nominated back in 2009 for playing a drunk, abusive, middle class mother in Precious. Lupita Nyong'o won in 2013 for 12 Years A Slave for playing, well, A SLAVE!!! You see what I'm saying??? Why couldn't Paula Patton be nominated for an Oscar for being the teacher that helps and supports Precious and her baby? Why couldn't David Oyelowo be nominated for being the leader in Red Tails, or for being an astronaut in Interstellar, OR FOR PORTRAYING THE LEADER OF THE CIVIL RIGHT MOVEMENT IN SELMA???? Heck, WHY WASN'T DEAR WHITE PEOPLE NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY??? I guess the academy wasn't a fan of the fact that that movie hit some points about certain things like our hair, the food we eat, how we speak, things like that. But Hollywood wants to acknowledge the man that inspired American Sniper who basically killed thousands and thousands of innocent people. #OscarsAreSoWhite isn't just as hashtag. It's a problem.
