Do we really need another 'black' award show? We haven't seemed to get the quality of the numerous shows we've already had right yet. Hahaha! (seriously though) Yes, creating another award show for black folks sounds nice and makes one feel all fuzzy in side with the idea it is a middle finger to the Oscars, but is that really what we should be concerned about in regards to Hollywood and the film industry? Boycotting an award show is cool (I never watch them anyway), but is black folk boycotting something deemed 'white' really all that effective? Our energy and focus never seems to be completely in the right places at times. When you consider a lot of great movies have been passed up by the major studios and would not have been made without independent producers, black investors, crowdfunding, etc... we should probably be focused more on ways to finance and distribute our own movies so that they can get made, people stay employed (crews, writers, actors, etc.), and we aren't dependent on those who are hesitant to touch anything black based on their fears our faces and stories aren't profitable. Getting an award... cool. Becoming more self-sufficient... EXCELLENT.
