Benefits with oseltamivir in treating influenza in adults
Oseltamivir is a drug that is used to treat flu symptoms (influenza). It reduces the severity of symptoms (such as stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, fever/chills, pains, and exhaustion) and speeds up recovery by 1-2 days. If you've been exposed to someone who already has the flu (such as a sick family member) or if there's a flu outbreak in your area, this drug can help you from getting sick. For more information, consult your physician. This drug works by preventing the flu virus from spreading. It's not a replacement for the flu shot.
This medication should be taken by mouth, with or without food. To minimise stomach distress, take it with food or milk. Take this medication as soon as you notice flu symptoms or as soon as you've been exposed to the flu. If you start taking oseltamivir within two days of either of these events, it will work best.
If you have the flu, follow your doctor's instructions and take oseltamivir twice a day for 5 days.
How does Oseltamivir help in treating flu?
Take oseltamivir as advised by your doctor to prevent the flu, usually once a day for at least 10 days. Follow your doctor's recommendations regarding how long you should take this medication. Your dosage is determined by your health condition, kidney function, and therapy response. The dosage for youngsters is also determined by their weight.
If you can't take the capsules, contact your doctor or pharmacist about oseltamivir liquid suspension. If the liquid is not available, open the capsule and combine the contents with a small amount of sweetened liquid (such as regular/sugar-free chocolate syrup, corn syrup, caramel topping, or light brown sugar dissolved in water) as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. Take the entire dose after stirring the liquid.
When the amount of medicine in your body is kept steady, this drug works best. Take this medication at the same time(s) every day at equally spaced intervals. Continue taking it for the entire time period recommended. Stopping the drug too soon could allow the virus to proliferate, leading to a return of the disease or failure to protect you from the flu.
If your disease persists or worsens, or if new symptoms arise, contact your doctor.
Oseltamivir phosphate is a pro-drug of the active metabolite (oseltamivir carboxylate) which is a potent and selective inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase enzymes, which are glycoproteins found on the virion surface. Viral neuraminidase enzyme activity is important for viral entry into uninfected cells, for the release of recently formed virus particles from infected cells, and for the further spread of the infectious virus in the body.Oseltamivir activity reduces viral shedding and infectivity.
Oseltamivir is effective agaisnt viral neuraminidases of influenza A (including pandemic H1N1) and influenza B.
Oseltamivir is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration of oseltamivir phosphate and is extensively converted by predominantly hepatic esterases to the active metabolite oseltamivir carboxylate. At least 75 % of an oral dose reaches the systemic circulation as the active metabolite. Exposure to the pro-drug is less than 5 % relative to the active metabolite. Plasma concentrations of both pro-drug and active metabolite are proportional to dose and are unaffected by co-administration with food.Pharmacokinetic parameters following twice daily dosing of oseltamivir 75mg capsules are as follows: Cmax of oseltamivir and oseltamivir carboxylate were found to be 65ng/mL and 348ng/mL, respectively, while AUC (0-12h) of oseltamivir and oseltamivir carboxylate were found to be 112ng·h/mL and 2719ng·h/mL.Medical
