Carol Frisque, a volunteer tour guide, talked about the staircase in the mansion at Parkwood National Historic Site Dec. 12. Malcolm Hooper is a Durham College student who recently won the Speaker Slam “Power of Belief” competition in Toronto and is now headed to the Speaker Slam Grand Slam event in November. A portion of Camp Samac in Oshawa will be used to provide shelter and support services for up to 40 members of Durham's homeless population. The site will replace warming centres at First Light Foundation of Hope in Oshawa and Christian Faith Outreach in Ajax and the two organizations will be the lead agencies at the site. Major construction is coming to Oshawa next year as the province is set to begin work on replacing the Simcoe and Albert streets Hwy. 401 bridges in 2021. The new bridges will be higher and longer to allow for widening of the 401. Part of the Simcoe bridge reconstruction will involve closing the Oshawa Visitor Centre.
