I gotta get your opinion on Kick- Ass.
I like the movie better than the comic, which itself is a fun read. But I think Millar got a little too carried away and JRJR a little too lax on Kick-Ass 2.
Hey there! From one Hellboy fan to another, can I get your input on the relationships in the Hellboy comics, romantic or not? Such as Hellboy, Kate, Roger, Abe, Liz, and the rest of the gang. I really enjoy your blog and would like to hear your thoughts on it. Can you also discuss some of the most Lovecraftian stories in the comics? Just when you have time, :)
Let's look at the series in terms of two things: Situation and Character.
The book is almost entirely situation-driven. The set-up for most stories is "X happens and Hellboy must do something about it," not "Hellboy decides to do X." It's all situation, with character occasionally coming to the surface to add to the narrative. This and the oppressive moodiness of the comic overall are the main reasons why romance is sparse in the Mignolaverse. Characters aren't looking to smooch up on each other because the world is ending every hour and every minute of every day, and they are in the unfortunate position of having to do something about it. The lack of visible romantic love in the series is what also makes it incredibly satisfying when it does occur (i.e. HB and Alice).
As for the rest of the gang, the way I've come to understand their relationships to one another is to compare it to the dynamic of soldiers in the trench. They aren't together by choice, they're there to do a job. Liz, Abe, Johann, Kate, and Daimio were/are bonded in their war against everything really fucking weird, but they also are detached from one another on more personal levels. The sit at the same table, they joke around, they definitely rely on one another in the field. But when it comes down to it, they easily break apart from one another. Look where Liz is. Johann was absolutely psychotic about getting even with Daimio. Devon very readily turned his paranoia and suspicions on Abe.
And I don't really know what to say about the most Lovecraftian stories. Lately, the book has leaned more on Arthurian/Anglo/Celt folklore than the elements of our boy H.P. But the early stuff is all very Lovecraftian, my two favorite being Conqueror Worm and The Island. The latter of which is arguably the absolute molecular beginning of the saga that put Hellboy where he is now
So you and your awesome art got me into Newsies and I wanna cry every time I listen to Santa Fe.(Which I listen to a lot now) Did you see it on Broadway or was it the movie you saw? ( I have not seen either but I will probably rent the movie sooooon!)
