A giant feat of giant feet! Osman Khan’s Contemporary Sculpture class hefts and totes the enormous Troll doll parts (that they collaboratively fabricated by hand over the last few weeks) from the Stamps sculpture studio all the way to The Arboretum. The Troll, officially titled "Untitled (with Pink Hair)” is, appropriately enough, installed in the Arboretum’s "Troll Knoll" (related to the Ann Arbor "Fairy Door" phenomenon) accessed from the Washington Street entrance. The students chose a Troll as the object of their weeks-long investigation into scale, building techniques, installation, and concept in contemporary sculpture after going through their collective accumulation of knickknacks and agreeing on the theme of 90's nostalgia. The troll is only there temporarily, so go check it out - soon! It is kind of like standing in the Redwoods. Except only one of the trees is really, really big. And that really, really big tree...is a Troll.

Here's one from the archives, posted in the spirit of excitement of finding out what's happening with that giant Troll doll from a few posts ago.
Last fall, Osman Khan's Studio 3D class took on another project of gigantic proportions, though this work all began as a small stuffed animal with purple fur.
Like the troll, this project was a group assignment focused on scale. After choosing the small stuffed dog as their starting point, the students disassembled the poodle to create pattern parts which they could enlarge. They made a smaller prototype to work out the kinks, and then made the humongous version from plastic which they inflated with fans. As you can see, they took the scale shift as an opportunity to take liberties with the shape as well. Note the fangs :)

From Osman Khan's Contemporary Sculpture class comes this: A 10 foot tall Troll Doll made of blue foam! That's one way to learn about scale shifts and modeling materials ... :)

This weekend Detroit lights up with DLECTRICITY -- a nighttime art and light festival featuring over 35 artists from all over the world, including our very own Heidi Kumao and Osman Kahn!
