I can't really summarize this series for you. It's like Steve and Bucky trying to figure themselves out after the fall of SHEILDRA (see: bubblewrapstargirl's "The Boyfriend Saga") + adventures with all of the kids from Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. In this story, Bucky is heavily influenced by his time as The Winter Soldier. He is not the guy that Steve grew up with back in Brooklyn. This Bucky is a lot more than Steve bargained for.
Life is a lot more than Steve Rogers bargains for. What I like about this story - that I originally hated - is that it really examines how much Steve is willing to take from Bucky before he finally says uncle. This man allows himself to be used sexually by his former best friend because he thinks that that will make Bucky love him. He makes himself listen to disturbing versions of stories from their past, that could not have happened, just so he could be around Bucky. This is not good for Steve's sanity.
And then there's Coulson's SHIELD. I don't know what happened here, but Fury's SHEILD seemed like super cool spy organization, but Coulson's SHIELD seems like creepy, Big Brother. Or maybe that's how Steve sees it, and I just never gave a damn about Fury. Bucky considers SHIELD a less evil HYDRA, and he's willing to play along for his "freedom". Phil Coulson is aware of Bucky's perception, and is not afraid to use that to his advantage. Steve would like to GTFO, but he won't leave without Bucky - and Bucky doesn't believe that SHEILD will just let Bucky leave. They won't.
If you are looking for pure Stucky, this stores are not for you. There's too much damage going on for this series to even attempt to be cute - at least not at the beginning. This series can be lovingly categorized as a slow build because, at 21 stories in, we are just now getting to a point where an attempt at romance can be made. Of all the rude!Bucky stories I've recently gotten into, I like tis one because there is so much growth for both parties.
This series is about sanity and self-care. It's about knowing when to say, "this is too much for me", and bowing out in a way that does not leave you feeling overly guilty. It's about two broken boys trying not to lose each other. This series is a masterpiece.
If you have know of any other rude!Bucky fics (that are not debwalsh’s "On The Air" or Salvia_G’s “Like A Cruel Mistress Woos") let me know. I'd love to chat with you.
