The ospreys at Kalmus Beach have lost their nest. It blew off this weekend in the wild southeast winds. This nest has always faced challenges but this is the first time I’ve seen it completely blown away. Some remains on the ground and they are trying to rebuild. These are tough birds but man, I feel for them. Other ospreys are already laying eggs… north side nests seem fine. After the caribou wandered out of range Monday, I went to check on the osprey situation. This time there were two! Both of the adults. The property owner said that usually by this time the young are out of the nest learning to fly, before migrating to waters that won't become ice-locked. He said they make a racket as they fly right over his house. I didn't get closer than 240m this time, and neither one of them raised the alarm or came closer than that. While upgrading their transmission lines s few years ago, Homer Electric Association linemen decided to leave this one pole in place. Good on them! They did place bird barriers on top of the adjacent poles' crossmember, but, judging from the photographs, I would say their efficacy is uncertain at best. The nest is, or I should say I was, and the nest nearly so, directly under the flightpath for Kenai Municipal Airport, and a Guardian Flight Alaska life flight was landing as I recorded. I think the Osprey is one of my favorite birds. They are in Michigan, just not where I grew up. Every family vacation we took I would see them fishing. Colorado. Florida. Wyoming. The effects of Isaias are now impacting two cameras; the first half of the video is on Sandy Cove in Northeast Maryland where a poor osprey is buffeted around until it finally flies off and the second half is a video who’s location is self evident showing the iconic symbol of Wildwood, New Jersey.
