Spa Esplanade, Herne Bay in August 1919. Our family who may be from Ospringe are spending their Summer holidays on the Kentish coast at nearby Herne Bay. Three friends sit facing eastwards and rather painfully on a picket fence. The young woman in the middle appears to be the same who gave the enigmatic backward glance earlier in the series. The young man (who may or may not be her brother) is marvellously dressed in a roll-necked submariner’s jumper with turned-up white trousers and stained and battered laceless pumps. To his right boats can be seen floating out-of-focus off the shore.

Spa Esplanade, Herne Bay in 1919 and in 2019. Our family who may be from Ospringe are spending their Summer holidays on the Kentish coast at nearby Herne Bay. The previous images appear to have been taken on the front verandah of this house.

Ospringe viewed from Mutton Lane (?) - such an English scene! The parish church of St Paul and St Peter in the distance is a Grade II listed building dating to 1200 AD. There’s a bicycle leaning precariously against a fence and washing on the line in the middle distance. It’s probably a Summer morning as the shadows aren’t long, the trees are in leaf and the sun is in the East.

A new album this weekend, full of possibilities.... 48 gelatin silver prints (120 x 90mm) many neatly and briefly annotated in an elegant silver script. The date is Summer 1919 and the place is the Kent Coast and inland to Faversham with few exceptions. There are five colourised images and almost all the photos are confidently and competently taken. We shall tag images from this album #ospringe after the village in one of the shots that may well be the home of the subjects. I paid £15 for this album at #chiswickcarbootsale - simply couldn’t resist some of the stunning century old images and the faded ghosts of the Summer of 1919. It must have been a bittersweet time of burgeoning hope and joy that WWI was over. Two decades later this generation would see this very differently perhaps.
