Chateau Musar is one of my go-to selections when ordering wine for business meals! Musar has a unique way of pleasing everyone from wine beginners to seasoned wine snobs, and even those who scrutinize my expense reports! From the Bekaa (Beqaa) Valley in Lebanon, Musar is an intriguing blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan made from old vines that date back to the 1930s. Due to extreme weather in 2010, much of the Cabernet was damaged, so overall volume was very low and the blend featured a higher percentage of Cinsault and Carignan - not the usual equal mix. Musar ages very well and the 10 is still very young, so I ordered it even before my water and requested an immediate, vigorous decant. The wine was obviously sound as beguiling aromatics exploded from the glass - mixed red/black fruit, violet, and spice box. After about an hour, the wine opened up nicely and, while still young, became not only accessible, but really enjoyable! Still primary, the palate featured a blend of mixed red/black fruit, with medium body and fine tannins, but with refreshing acidity that offset that youthfulness of the wine. Remarkably, the wine even paired reasonably well with the delicious grilled Arctic Char from Ostra, although lamb or red meat would be an ideal pairing. The entire experience at Ostra, which has a swanky dining room with high ceilings and an open kitchen, was first class.
