Would you be able to point me in the right direction for identifying these little ostracods with interesting patterns? They're probably around 1 mm long, this was taken through a 60x12mm hand lens. I believe these to be descendants of individuals I collected from a small pool isolated by a drop in water levels from a creek just downstream of a eutrophic stormwater management pond in southwestern Ontario. However, it isn't impossible that a seperate species hitchhiked in with my aquarium plants.

I was delighted to finally catch one right against the aquarium glass long enough to get a good look at with magnification. They just look beige to the naked eye.

Nature Hikes Early 2025 - Part 2

Here's part two, because Tumblr cannot hold all my bugs

The beetle is a Sun Beetle (Amara) who was in quite a hurry. There's next a ladybird of course, and after that is likely an American Winter Ant (Prenolepis imparis). It probably recently emerged for a mating flight. Next up are a few shots of the lake, and then a bright orange jelly fungus. The next is a delicate little Tailed Blue butterfly that's very fast and difficult to get a picture of. Next, a bullfrog and some seed shrimp from the vernal pools, followed by some scenic shots, more jelly fungi and some vetch.

Whew. That's it for the photo roundup of nature hike stuff. I've been using iNaturalist more these days so it's been fun uploading these. Spring started just last week, so I expect plenty more cool things to find soon!

🌊🌊 🐚 BENTHIARY 🐚 🌊🌊 day 23-24 Ostracods are microscopic crustaceans that's been around since the Ordovician period; countless documented fossils have been found of it, most famously being used to confirm they have the oldest penis + largest sperm in any animal ever. Congrats...? Some have bioluminescence, making their presence known whenever they gather in the ocean ✨🌌✨ I like the idea of these sea-fireflies as sea witch familiars; they look pretty magical on their own. A pact with ostracods means you gotta conjure algae all the time for eats though! I had fun designing cute ostracods being excited for all types of algae 🍀🌿🍀
