Finally got to check out the letterpresses at Texas A&M University! This is a one-of-a-kind modified Washington Press. Here's a transcription of what's written on the little white card: This early 20th-century printing press is an "Extra Heavy Photo-Engravers' Proof Press" built by the Ostrander-Seymour Company of Chicago, Illinois. It is a modified version of the Washington Press, by far the most popular iron hand press in America in 1820 until the end of the hand press period. Because printing proofs for photo-engravings required even more power than a standard press could provide, Ostrander-Seymour designed this press to answer that need—featuring ban auxiliary yoke, a reinforced frame, and the elimination of all wood from the design. It was the only press ever designed for that specific purpose. Addition to this press, Cushing Library is home to a reproduction of an English Common Press and four reproductions of 19th-century Parlor Presses. #washingtonpress #ironhandpress #letterpress #ostrander-seymour #tamu #aggies #texasaggies #cushinglibrary (at Cushing Memorial Library & Archives)
