WoW Headcanon: The Kirin Tor, Modera and Garithos
My first contribution to the tag. Where the hell was the Kirin Tor when Garithos seized control of the Alliance forces in Lordaeron?
When the Archmage Antonidas fell in Dalaran and the Book of Medivh was lost, the Kirin Tor knew the city would fall. Putting in place previously established evacuation protocols, they opened portals to Southshore, Menethil and Stormwind. To the first two places they sent civilians and farmers; to the third, most of their knowledge and artifacts.
As the portal to bring forth Archimonde started to grow in power, the portals the Kirin tor opened collapsed, thus having to move the remaining evacuees by foot though Hillsbrad as the Dalaran army made a desperate effort to stop Arthas and Kel'thuzad.
Ultimately, when the city was destroyed, only a small percentage of people remained in Dalaran. either dying in the chaos or managing to escape.
The Kirin Tor, still reeling from the unthinkable defeat and the loss of the majority of its army, couldn't decide their next course of action. Finally, they proclaimed it was in the best interest of Dalaran to safe-keep its people and knowledge, commanding a tactical retreat from Lordaeron.
Although most of the Kirin Tor retreated to tend its displaced people, a sizable contingent was stationed in Southshore to stop the advance of the Scourge and the Legion beyond Thoradin's wall. Managing to thwart the enemie's advance beyond Tarren Mill for weeks, they were joyous to learn of the resistance forming in Lordaeron, under one Othmar Garithos.
With a rendezvous set in the Throndroril river, the Kirin Tor advance, lead by Archmage Modera summed its forces to Garithos, expecting to be sent to retake Lordaeron. Instead, Garithos sent them eastward to stop the pouring of undead forces from Quel'thalas. He told Modera that although her help was appreciated, Dalaran was already his primary target, and that the "blood" elves were already there, and that her forces would be of better use to hold the rearguard.
Modera, although displeased, trusted Garithos judgement. The blood elves didn't lack any of the magical prowess her forces had, and if they intended to take Lordaeron, they had to make sure the Scourge was cut of from its reinforcements. Promising to send for reinforcements if/when the need arose, Garithos left Modera's forces defending the Throndroril river pass and diverting Andorhal's scourge.
As the Kirin Tor sent more forces from Stormwind, Modera grew impatient from Garithos silence. Sending messengers, she learnt that Garithos had branded the blood elves as traitors, with little explanation and room for questioning. Modera, privy of the knowledge that the elves where suffering from magical withdrawal since the destruction of the Sunwell, hesitated in taking a stance. She wasn't sure who to trust, Garithos, a man that she knew little of but was of the highest hierarchy in the forces left in Lordaeron, or Kael'thas Sunstrider, the arrogant prince of Quel'thalas but part of the Kirin Tor as well.
One thing was sure, Dalaran was again on Alliance hands, if she crossed Garithos out of loyalty for Kael'thas, it would destroy any possibility of retaking Lordaeron for the Alliance.
To sacrifice the blood elves, or to confront Garithos and risk losing Lordaeron. Modera's hesitation was cut short when news of the blood elves imminent execution reached her. It was too late when she herself presented herself to Garithos, the blood elves had escaped aided by demons, as he put it.
Modera, furious in the inside, collected on the outside, questioned Garithos actions and his lack of cooperation with the Kirin Tor, after all, he had sentenced one of her own. He left little room for interpretation; if the Kirin Tor was to support the traitorous blood elves, they'd brand themselves as traitors as well. The archmage was forced to retreat to her post, now with the full knowledge that until Garithos was replaced, the alliance had no chance of retaking Lordaeron.
Sending requests for support to Stormwind, Modera was disgruntled when no help came, no one to relive Garithos of his command. Her distrust kept growing as any reinforcements sent from the alliance were diverted to him and her troops received no relief, but from the forces sent by the Kirin Tor, those were all diverted to her.
She confronted him once again, and this time, he was clear he did not need any "pointy ears lovers" under his command. She was shocked, disgusted and nauseated. What if the blood elves "treason" wasn't more than racism? She had already a bad time explaining the blood elves sentence to the high elves under her command, it had made life in the post almost unbearable, and now all seemed to be the mad judgments of a prejudiced man.
Garithos ultimately ordered her to continue in her post, as he was to be the sole hero of the retaking of Capital City. Modera left without saying anything more, yet considered retreating her forces from Throndroril. She couldn't let herself do it, though. The Kirin Tor was the only force keeping the scourge from getting reinforcements from the east. But she was going to make sure Garithos paid for any crime he had committed.
Ultimately, Garithos gambit failed as he was betrayed by his "allies". Modera cursed her indecision, and following reports of undead forces gathering in Lordaeron City, she decided to retreat her forces to Dalaran. The city was nothing but ruins with a pathetic contingent guarding them, it was only a matter of days before the survivors of Garithos forces came pouring towards the city, with tales of free undead betraying them.
Though these "forsaken" kept to themselves, their decimation of Garithos army was enough to label them as enemies for the alliance. Ultimately Modera relinquished her command of the Kirn Tor advance the moment the Council returned in full to Dalaran. Although few raised voiced against her command, she was still filled with shame and regret.
