Happy 7th Anniversary!
“The Heart of the Truest Believer” Unused Script Snippets Compilation
So, as some of you know, recently I was lucky enough to win a script for “The Heart of the Truest Believer” in an OUAT auction. I think scripts are some of the most fun things you can win in auctions like these -- it’s cool to see how lines change and develop over the course of the writing and filming processes, they open the door to additional fun fan speculation, and of course, we get to see lines and actions that didn’t make the cut and in some cases, maybe see a completely new product!
And now that I have the script, I wanted to share it with everyone so we can do all of that groovy stuff!
There were a fair amount of changes, additional bits of dialogue, and honestly just funny things I noticed that I wanted to point out to laugh at like a fourth grader! I put in every thing that was in the script, but not in the episode, but if there’s a scene or something from the episode that you want to see, please let me know and i’ll see what I can do to get it to you (Sorry, buying the scripts and scanning can get expensive and I’m going to London this summer)!
Also, there’s a fair amount of shippy stuff in here, namely for Swan Fire, Sleeping Warrior, and Captain Swan (Ergo, the early ship tags). It’s not all that’s in here by any means, but I do want you going into this knowing that.
Finally, as a personal plea from me, let’s please try not to go too beserk over this, or rather, like our fandom sometimes tends to do. I wanted to share all of this good stuff for fun and archival purposes and I’d hate to inadvertently cause the next fandom war. And look, I get it: Fandoms be fandoms and my plea probably won’t factor into much in the grand scheme of things, but hey, I had to try, am I right? Just remember to treat each other the way you’d want to be treated. Certain scenes and ship that you might not like could mean a great deal to others and we should all try and respect each other.
Okay! Now that that’s out of the way, without further adieu, join me under the cut and let’s get to it!
“GRABBING HOOK’S HEAD AND KISSING THE HOLLY HELL OUT OF HIM” (pretty much all I’ve seen in that script) @AdamHorowitzLA (x)
I've always wondered what the direction was for that kiss because from the first moment I saw it, it just seemed like something so much more than just a kiss. Now does that mean it was Jen and Collin's idea to look completely wrecked over it and do that thing where they chase each others' lips but don't kiss? And does that mean that the thing they do in so many other kisses is all something Collifer came up with? How much of the little touches we love so much, should we credit to them I wonder.
They should get a ton of credit, they breath life into these characters and are amazing actors and artists.
However, there’s something a little off in your ask, (please don’t be creepy and confuse reality with fiction just because the actors are good at their jobs) so I want to make it clear the actors are just doing their jobs, and to me, that scene was a pretty spot on interpretation of the script.
No scene is described 100% in the script, ever. Actors are not robots that get feed a set of exact instructions. They take the script and along with the director and dozens of other technicians in the production (hair, makeup, costume, lighting, camera, sound etc etc) interpret it and breathe life into it.
That being said, the “chasing the lips” thing you ask about seems like a logical interpretation of “hot and lusty” and “she’s into it.” Hot and lusty are not stage directions. They describe the scene, but don’t prescribe exactly how the actors should convey that past her grabbing him and kissing him. So the actors have to decide what actions and emotions to use to convey “hot and lusty.” Additionally looking “wrecked” is your interpretation, the script said “reeling.” Pretty similar I’d say.
Colin said at the meet and greet I went to that a lot of the scripted kisses say things like “the greatest kiss of all time” and he and Jen would always have a laugh over how they were expected to out do the last one that was described in a very similar way. So a big part of it is always on them.
So all those “little touches” probably very few are in the script, but they shouldn’t be. In fact in this script we see a prime example of an overly prescribed action that apparently didn’t work. The script said she grabs his face, but on set they must have thought the lapels worked better, so they made a change and tried it a different way that worked better. Actors (and directors) need room to interpret the script their way, they are just as much a part of the process as the writers and deserve a ton of credit.
The show could have told the story of Emma and Hook with the same script and two different actors and I’m sure it would have been interesting, but I doubt it would have captured us the same way. Jen and Colin have done something very extraordinary with these roles and I feel so thankful to have been along for the ride.
It’s been magical.
Omg enjoy this beautiful piece of work! Mary Margaret as a nun, Anna (Emma) a terminator in couture and a blonde boy named Henry who is so much more annoying here 😂 Also endless Star Wars metaphors!
