OUAT Rewatch S01E01
Favourite Scene Maybe it’s a bit boring, but that opening hands down.
Like, everything about it. From the very first shot where David is riding through the gorgeous scenery to be by Snow’s side, all the way through seeing Snow White and Prince Charming break the sleeping curse, followed by them getting married. It’s a combination of the shots, and the fact that I’m such a hard core Snowing shipper. In fact it’s nice being a shipper and looking back at the scene.
Even Regina’s first appearance was quite good. Her costume and entrance, just the whole set up. It was done pretty perfectly and I genuinely think there is no other way they could have started this series.

Least Favourite Scene “Do you love him?” “Of course I love him.”
I... HATE. This scene. Because it’s just doesn’t work for me. I’ve seen people claim Emma’s lie detector wasn’t working but that just doesn’t work for me. Why would Emma randomly have a problem now? Despite what Anti-Emma people try and claim, Emma had no intention of coming to steal Henry away, all she cared about was that he was happy and safe. She wasn’t trying to force herself into his life at this point.
And on top of that, I don’t have a lie detector in me, but even I would say Regina was lying in that moment. The delivery was so cold and emotionless and phoned in. I think the writers either had no intention of Regina being good, or otherwise needed to get Emma to stay and couldn’t think of another way to do it - even though there are plenty of other ways.
The scene itself is good enough on its own but when you know the direction it takes, it just doesn’t work.

What I Would Do Differently If I was gonna rewrite a large portion of the show, it actually would have been interesting if Emma had been adopted. If she was a normal girl with a normal family before she was dragged back into the Fairy Tale world. Or even better, if she was married to Neal and raising Henry when they somehow got dragged back into the Fairy Tale world.
I like stories of normal people dragged into the very much non-normal lives. And to be honest, Emma pretty much had a complete blank slate before going to Storybrooke which made it easier, sure, but it’s a bit boring. It would have been much more interesting if there was more to her normal life and she had to combine her normal life with her abnormal one.
Another change I might have made would be to have Regina pretending to be nice. She acts nice for her intro scene with Emma but then becomes a typical and cliche villain afterwards. I just didn’t find her threatening as much as annoying. But if she had been more calculating, pretending to be nice while working behind the scenes, it would have been much more interesting to watch.
Let me see if I have this right.
There's a kid, on a bus, with a book of fairytales. Running away from home.
Said kid is running away to find a biological parent.
Kid brings bio parent home.
Where said bio parent meets the kid's single Latina mother. (And makes heart eyes at her)
Then, bio parent and single mom have a drink.
Remind me again what season this is?
Happy Once Upon A Time Day!
The pilot for OUAT might be one of my favorite pilots ever. It’s so incredibly magical in both the literal and figurative sense. The acting is incredibly charming. Ginny and Josh absolutely killed it. Snow attempting to kiss Charming awake completely broke my heart -- the mixture of naïveté, love, and grief were so raw.
This pilot also served as a great reminder of talented the cast is. It takes a certain talent to make the extra-ness of some of these character believable. I believe the show would have failed had Robert Carlyle and Lana Parilla not found that line with Rumple and Regina.
I will also forever say that the scene of Charming sword-fighting the black knights with baby Emma in his arms is quite possibly my most favorite scene in the entire show. And it’s a crime we never saw a parallel scene with Killian, but I digress.
I think it’s interesting to see what later gets retconned. Obviously, Regina was later revealed to not hate Snow because she was pretty -- and I have a hard time believing Snow would actually say that seriously. We’re also led to believe that Regina doesn’t actually love Henry. Look back, I (in universe) that it was because she didn’t believe herself capable of it, but it falls a bit into retcon territory to me, as well.
