Late night/early morning fic speculations with @lilbittymonster and we came up with the best idea

The viscorids don't truly have jobs per se, individuals contributing based on what's necessary for a hive to continue functioning. In the largest hive societies, there's no actual castes of soldiers or workers or queens, but any individual can modify themselves to fit any needed role and are instructed/expected from birth to do so. Most of their work force is based around the creation, procession, and distribution of food, not only for citizens but also for their wide variety of living technology.

The puca are much the same--they have no money system to speak of and see such things as inefficient and prone to exploitation. A job belongs to whoever is capable of performing it; if the nearest puca cannot, information about the job is bounced around their psychic network until reaches someone who can.

While the viscorids have no hive mentality to speak of, the mental separation between individual puca grows thinner every generation.

Viscorids grow their offspring in the bodies of other creatures. Normally they use specially bred and crafted beasts for this purpose, creatures with numerous backup systems that allow them to survive multiple birthing events. War prisoners are also common hosts. Some prisoners might even be sent back so the birthing event can sow trauma in the enemy ranks.

The more “peaceful” or “moral” viscorids may choose to instead lay bare eggs, but the metabolic demands of newly-hatched young aren’t easily met. A newborn goes from around a foot in length to over four in less than three days, requiring almost the entire period to be spent eating and resting between meals.

a lot of my aliens are questionable in motivation but the only kind i'd call inherently evil are the Viscorids and Starborn. Even then, the Starborn are acting out of a combination of terror and malice (but try telling that to people whose planets they've torched).

Even the viscorids who have abandoned the practices of their kind are either intolerably arrogant or selfish. Any 'altruism' on their part is more about making themselves feel good or advancing their personal projects than anything else.
