I cannot tell you the amount of times I heard this growing up. “Such and such wasn’t a bad person, just a result of their time.” Nope. Sorry. You’ve got it wrong again. These people weren’t thermometers, but rather thermostats. They WERE the hatred and bigotry. They were the reason so many of our ancestors were killed, mistreated and stolen from. They were either actively or passively to blame for what happened ... and what is happening now. Treating racist and white supremacist with care, like they are fragile beings, is disrespectful to those of us hurt by their bile. We must start holding people accountable, holding up mirrors, and make them uncomfortable. Let’s stop glorifying hatred and bigotry of the past. Let’s stop making excuses.
