In 2020, Neil Gaiman committed to making a “hefty donation” to OurVOICE, the agency where I received counseling services in 2013. It was later discovered that he had not made the donation he promised.

I am not professionally affiliated with this agency, but believe strongly in its mission: to inspire hope and healing while ending sexual violence and human trafficking through education, counseling and advocacy.

If you choose to dedicate your donation to the victims of Neil Gaiman - those who have come forward, those who will, and those who can’t - please dedicate that donation to the name “Calliope.”

I am so in awe of this beautiful statement and this powerful idea.

Notes Of A Native Son by James Baldwin is the perfect inspiration for the Native Son movement and platform because it embodies the self actualization of freedom and existence. As a #BlackGayMan I, like so many of my brothers, draw inspiration from Mr. Baldwin's confidence and courage to be himself freely and without apology. His words defy the boxes used by society to marginalize and minimize race, gender and class. I grew up reading Baldwin in Cincinnati. He was also one of my Mother's favorite authors. His words shaped my imagination of who I could become. As a teenager, I dreamed of living in Paris and writing novels because of Baldwin. In college when I saw Mr. Baldwin speak at Hampton University, I was entranced by every word, thought and brilliant turn of phrase that rolled off his tongue. His gestures -- the sway of his hand and punctuation of his fingers -- were only outdone by the roll of his big, wide brown eyes. Paris didn't happen for me because God had another plan. I became Editor-in-Chief of VIBE magazine and worked with the intention of Baldwin to create culturally impactful content that would change the world's view of Black folks, POCs and hip hop music. As the Black Gay EIC, I also had the responsibility of being authentic, audacious and living my truth -- another Baldwin-esque characteristic. Now, I find myself living my purpose through Native Son and inspiring and empowering the Black Gay community and working to amplify, uplift and shift our narrative. I'm indebted to my brother James "Jimmy" Baldwin for his vision, speaking truth to power, leading by example, and liberating us to be free. As he says in the book and I aspire: "I want to be an honest man and a good writer."
