Happy 1st Birthday to the last Sandman episode, Death: The High Cost of Living.

I am 4 days late, this episode premiered on July 31, 2025. Sorry. Happy 1 year and 4 days.

Was this a great episode? No. Was the decision to end the entire series with this a good one? I don't think so. Do I still feel like a gigantic asshole when I think about all the time I spent thinking "wow they sure did change Mad Hettie's role so significantly by making her play such a direct role in Morpheus’s death 🤔 it sure will be interesting to see how they address that in the Death special 🤔 I wonder if- OH I SEE NEVER MIND THEY ARE JUST GOING TO IGNORE IT OK I GUESS 🤷‍♀️"?? I do. Yes. A gigantic asshole.

But at the same time, the episode certainly wasn't bad. The writing wasn't the best, and you could tell the budget wasn't the highest (exactly how much time did they spend riding around in that cab anyway??), but it certainly wasn't horrible or anything. The casting and the acting were all great, including the entire supporting cast.

(If I'm totally honest, the "life is worth living" messaging fell kind of flat for me after the way the rest of season 2 shook out. But I continue to find season 2 pretty thematically incoherent and confused about what it's trying to say and what message it's trying to get across. 🤷‍♀️ So, oh well. I also think the decision to separate this so much from the rest of the story was a mistake. Like, what year is it? Is Morpheus dead? Is Daniel Dream? For how long? How is Death doing? Does she have any opinions or emotions or anything about any of this? Does she look at Sexton and see Morpheus? Am I supposed to look at Sexton and see Morpheus? And if so should I also picture his funeral and all his loved ones saying how much they like his replacement more than him?)

Oops I'm sorry I got negative. I wasn't going to get negative, but then I did. My bad.

In conclusion, I would have happily watched an episode of Kirby reading the phonebook since I love her as Death so so so much, so yeah. This episode was fine. At least we got to see Death having a good time at the club.

Anyway. Happy Birthday + 4 days to Death THCOL. 🖤
