Hiii, feel like I've been here too much recently, hope it isn't annoying, but if shadowsan didn't fail black sheep as he didn't see it as a plausible way to do it cause she'd repeat and he can't do the same thing twice, that'd be suspicious. So black sheep does graduate and they go on the caper to Casablanca but since she doesn't meet the archaeologist guy and thus does not get introduced to a different pov about stealing, and they steal the eye of Vishnu and then go out to sightsee how do you think the Au would go?
Its no problem i like getting asks from you :D like hearing from you [sorry i always take so many business days to answer + if my answers aren’t always the best]
I think canonically cs trades in the idea that even without that interaction with the archeologist carmen would immediately recoil from any type of violence towards people, the s1 finale had her saying that shadowsan knew she would never cross the line and that he knew what would happen when they discovered they couldn’t push her across it [aka why he was avoiding her entering vile at all] + the scene of the dogs being able to puppy eye her into giving them the bread she stole hints that she would steal but quickly fold due to her compassion if something pushed her like that
So an au where she doesn’t learn that stealing is the same as stealing history [much like she feels her own history is achingly missing] and it's not about the money from the archeologist, I think she’d still start to feel a tug at her heart if she saw the news afterwards thinking she’d feel great about her first caper [and on the news! Even!] and proving herself only for the news anchor to spell out that it's still a loss. Even sooner if she just runs into people distraught at the loss of the diamond during the sightseeing after.
Gray would try to hype her up because they are professionals! Carmen would only be able to retake SOME of her joy in proving how skilled she is, and she’s proud of that always. Like carmen will always be down for showing off, But at carmen’s center now that she’s free*, would be sightseeing, gingerly trying to get a groove with her group, and getting mama! Bear to spill who found her STILL. Her priorities honestly even more than stealing as a game, like i’m thinking about the time gap where she just did that before her first mission as carmen and even how she did that lil selfie because she was so overwhelmed at being able to experience the world before being determined to crash the caper. And I don't believe she would ever stop trying to glean from anyone where she actually came from, even more so now that she can actually look or have access to her tutors [since they're mostly VILE agents themselves] not knowing they don’t know jack. Money is like such a vague reward to her, like wooh stole something with a big number and only start appreciating it when she gets to funnel it towards her true passions: appreciating the world and looking for crumbs.
Stealing is just a fun job. something she takes pride in being good at but doesn't really fulfill any of her more immediate needs.
Stealing from stalls and random people imo is still in the cards [how long depending on who guilts her for doing it…thats not gonna be vile but who knows maybe she hears a stall owner cry out in a way that touches her heart] and she would still have like such a fun time sightseeing for the first time in earnest, she can be such a geek and spouting facts she already knows with Player chiming in with new ones, and gray pulling her to hotspots they discover on site. He’s willing to let the missions lie after they’re said and done and that would be great for her true mission to actually experience stuff.
Honestly would love this for an RC au because… yeah gray is gonna be her go to partner and he does end up putting his foot down, wanting to know why this sightseeing trip also seems to have her so yearny and sometimes disappointed [after she hits a dead end in her search] and just kinda weird; like she wants home but she also thinks she was abandoned but maybe it was brunt who saved her but what if it was an agent. with carmen very slowly confiding more and more to him. I also think being closer with carmen for this specific goal would provide fascinating contrast with gray who is an orphan and i want that lore and how that affects him lol [because it really does imo] + the gradual change that happens once they go from students to co workers, professionals mate…and /// as the years go on]
I feel like shadowsan unable to keep her on the isle might try to avoid having her assigned to any high conflict missions to avoid the truth that carmen would not do what was needed[™] if it came to that - thus still fueling their current antagonistic relationship, maybe even forcing carmen to hold her ground for one such mission and run into that problem anyway, i don’t see him thinking of helping her run away because that's a carmen original idea <3 but i can see him being avoidant to an unhelpful degree while still trying to be near in case he needs to protect her when VILE inevitably finds out or even just when SHE find outs and she’s upset with everyone involved.
I think it would be fun to see if carmen would actually come clean to player because him talking about his white hat hacker intentions would start chipping towards reflections of her own intentions if she’s bragging like a game and he’s proud cause he actually helped the security in whatever she was going to steal from and whoops they both have to talk apparently cause it almost looks like she’s there.
I think that carmen COULD probably go at least a year or 2 before she was smacked with the idea that civilians are collateral damage as long as she doesn’t join gray for bellum missions [ something might give gray the suspicions that she wasn’t ok with it and he would just omit any lethal details when he bragged to her…he’d be honest if she asked but omission feels like something they both deal in considering carmen is also cagey about herself] and inevitably still run away and become carmen! I think 3 years is pushing it but a year at least seems plausible if she’s mildly invested in VILE as a job but not giving it so much thought she wants to skedaddle right away since hey VILE money funds sightseeing and she has access to their files to try and do her investigating [maybe try and learn from Player or bring him in].
I think i always just object to the idea of on hand killing being so common in their job because that was their first mission but they apparently had that escalation that one time and I’m not even sure i believe the crew didn’t just knock out the crew at the site. Since he’s in the opening they didn’t bother to hunt down the archeologist. And the rest of the show the only on screen bodies are from ACME and almost Carmen.
If they’re good at their job they could avoid having Carmen find out because it just doesn’t really happen unless Bellum brings her in and spells out her plan to endanger a lot of people since she’s the member who most directly does this. And it's not so hard to believe that as Brunt's favorite and shadowsan shielding her she would more often get missions from them. Or cleo. Just be good at stealing guys. VILE doesn’t care if she knows but aren’t always pushing for lethal missions and assume their students understand stuff. heck the reveal that gray wasn't killing anymore doesn't sink in til the final time. he was willing to let chase go if he stopped pursuing and that still didn't ring bells that he was anti-killing because maybe he wasn't yet. it just seemed normal to not kill someone who stopped chasing lol.
In the meantime tho lots of fun things to ponder about her relationships because yeah that can be really juicy if the context is that she had done several missions not knowing the grander implications. and still has that yearning to know where she's from and gaining the short term goal [VILE agent] can't fill that need/void.
someone fuck him nasty style before i do

I think it is a sign that they have made the character sufficiently endearing when she does poorly planned out shit and I am like “Oh honey NO” but still watch. Like she makes genuinely questionable decisions and I’m like -whelp this will end terribly and I can’t wait to see it for some reason.
