I find myself always seeing Van on the other side of the good guy, bad guy, fence, he himself is not inherently evil, and he's uncharacteristically noble and kind to his enemies, especially if he once knew them. However he's so headstrong about his ideals, and his stance, that he will stand as the dark knight opposing his friends, comrades, what have you. That he believes he is right and will not change his opinion even with indelible proof of his being wrong, he will never admit to his faults until defeat or death. That changing sides would be treason to his very soul, and if he agrees with said villains ideals, he will follow through to try and realize them, in his own method. Though same can be said of him agreeing with the protagonist's ideals, if given proof of their heart, and their conviction to see their own way through, he will do his best to aide them in whatever ways he can, either way his loyalty is to but one.
