Output #2: Counselor Interview
Assessing the Competencies of Del Pilar Academy’s Guidance Staff as Counselors
Last July 10, 2017, Arianna Tanaleon of HumSS-12 interviewed and aimed to assess Ms. Jessa Mae M. Galos, and the school’s Guidance Office in general, about five specific competencies of a counselor: interpersonal skills, personal beliefs and attitudes, conceptual ability, personal soundness, and mastery of techniques.
At the beginning of their simple talk, Ms. Jessa clarified that there are no licensed counselors among the three employees in their office; thus ruling out their mastery of techniques. Ms. Jessa shared how they would set boundaries between them and their counselee, setting aside their emotions as well to focus on the case. If they are close to the counselee, they refer them to a different counselor to refrain from bias – unless the counselee specifically requests for them. Most of the time, they are the ones to reach out to those who needs counseling. She also explained that they do not solve their counselee’s problems; they help him/her realize what the best step to take is.
For Ms. Jessa, the most important thing that they must always have, and always has, is the respect for every student, for every counselee. And in every ‘counseling’ session, they would calm their tone as much as they can to ease their counselee to disclosing his/her problems to them, so that they can help in the simplest way they can: simple talk.
