What is International Overdose Awareness Day? International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is a global event held on August 31st each year and aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have met with death or permanent injury as a result of drug overdose International Overdose Awareness Day is observed on 31 August. It is a time to remember people lost and an opportunity to take action to end overdose. MC Counselling is a proud supporter of International Overdose Awareness Day, taking time to reflect on all the lives we have lost to overdose. To prepare for this day, earlier in the month, "The Bulletin" from The Penington Institute featured my story on overdose after discussing that overdose doesn't necessarily mean dying, however many people do pass and this day is for us to remember the lives worldwide lost to overdose. Today, MC Counselling will feature many different elements of overdose in the hope of better informing Australia and the globe. If you are struggling with addiction, there is help for you, always. You do matter, your life is important and whatever has led you to addiction being the central part of your life can be changed. I've been there and it's possible to turn your life around. Today, we are going to start with fact sheets on addiction. Later today, we will feature the articles from "The Bulletin" from The Pennington Institute, where I am featured and fact sheets on different drugs and overdose that can occur. We will then post images of the different people's lives who are affected by overdose. MC Counselling specialises in removing addiction from an addicts life. August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day. People across the globe have organized community events to fight, to build and to grieve for those who are no longer with us. Harm Reduction Coalition fights, builds and grieves with them. We have all lost too many parents, children, siblings, friends and neighbors.
Ending the overdose crisis will take all of us. We may not see a year with no overdoses in our lifetimes, but reducing harm and healing from the multi-generational harms of the drug war will require collective action. In the last few years, we’ve seen harm reduction as a movement grow. There is more awareness and support for naloxone. And yet, so many barriers remain to getting overdose prevention resources to the people who need them. We need universal access to naloxone and harm reduction services, on demand access to evidence-based treatment, and everything in our toolkit that we know works. But that won’t be enough if we don’t also stand together to fight against racialized drug policies, heal from stigma and shame, and challenge the systemic harms faced by people who use drugs and their families. It will take all of us.

In February of 2017 my youngest son relapsed. That relapse was fatal since the heroin he bought was mixed with furanyl-fentanly, one of the many fentanyl analogs killing so many. My son was 27 years old, father of an 8 year old son. In the journal that we found after my son’s death, we read how he knew 2017 was going to suck as he went through withdrawal and tried to overcome his addiction. He was determined to beat it though and come into 2018 like a star. Addiction said otherwise and a dealer who had no scruples helped addiction along.
These earrings are in memory of my son who, for years, advocated for the legalization of marijuana. I was one of those die hard anti-drug parents, but he proved to me, with well researched logic, that marijuana was actually beneficial, if used responsibly. There is new research now that shows that marijuana can actually help with those going through opioid addiction.
But I didn’t just make these earrings to look cool or to say, “hey, I have a dead child who smoked weed”. I donate 10% of every sale of these earrings to a group called NC Harm Reduction.
" North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition (NCHRC) is a statewide grassroots organization dedicated to the implementation of harm reduction interventions, public health strategies, drug policy transformation, and justice reform in North Carolina and throughout the American South. NCHRC engages in grassroots advocacy, resource and policy development, coalition building, and direct services for people impacted by drug use, incarceration, sex work, overdose, gender, HIV and hepatitis and first responders. “ - from the website.
The people who make up this amazing group are out there on the streets reaching out to those suffering from addiction. They offer food, clean syringes, fentanyl test kits, to make sure the stuff they’re buying isn’t going to kill them like it killed my son. They offer info about recovery and rehab facilities. They offer an ear and a shoulder. They see an addict as a person, a human being, suffering from an illness that will not let go.
