Epilogue (The Reason)
There is a dangerous sort of wistfulness tugging at Thiago as he watches the boy go—hazy-edged memories of his own escapades with his friends as a kid, far too distant now—so he looks back at the corner store's drink selection. As he makes his choice of beers, his phone buzzes. Thiago sets down the cases and checks. A text from Liz: “Where are you?” Thiago taps out a reply: “Took the scenic route, be there soon” Two checkmarks, and an answer: “Ok” “No rush” Thiago cracks a brief grin, hearts the last message, and pockets his phone again. ~*~ Thiago doesn’t actually know what age he is anymore. He lost decades in the Cave, that much he can tell. The lines of his face say fifties, the white in his hair says sixties, and the blast scars muddy the rest of the details. When making his falsified documents, the Order put him down as fifty-seven and left it at that. That’s good enough for Thiago. Best not to think about it too hard.
Or, sometime between the bad and the worse, Thiago has a good day.
Part of a larger AU called 90 Seconds To Midnight! Can be read as a stand alone, but of course I recommend checking out the master post. Implicit spoilers up through OPD 6!!
