Staying in the safe house was nothingexciting. Actually, it was boring. When she wasn’t on missions, Sombra was typingaway on her keyboard, staring at the multiple holoscreens scattered around herrooms, digging up information on anyone that could be of use. Amelie was campedout in her room, either cleaning her sniper rifles, of which she had many, orknitting. It surprised you that she had such a calming hobby, but, after receivingyour first of many blankets from her, you didn’t complain.
Reaper, on the other hand, drove you up thewall. While he was so focused on missions, to the point of reverting to thedays when he was Gabriel Reyes, Strike Commander, he was such a damn punk atthe safe house. He’d slouch around the house in his hoodie and sweatpants,making sure to shuffle his socked feet across the living room carpet before hetouched anyone, shocking them to no end.
“For science,” he always said, claiming tobe testing how corporeal or incorporeal he had to be for an electric shock totravel through his body. You would glare at him and rub the pained spot beforeshooing him away and demanding your own chill time to be peaceful.
Other times, like around the holidays, he’ddecorate the whole house. Halloween and Day of the Dead were two of hisfavorites. There would always be an altar up, where pictures of Gabriel’sfamily, members of Los Muertos that Sombra refused to name, and Gerard would beto honor them. And then there was Christmas, oh gosh, you couldn’t count thetimes that you had had to kiss every other member of the household because of apiece of mistletoe that Gabriel hung between the kitchen and the living room.It was because of that, that you got you first kiss with the man but that wasn’tthe point.
Gabriel, when he wasn’t Reaper, was a manwho struggled to find a way to reconnect with who he was. Laid back, relaxed,happy.
Often times that meant finding silly pranksto play. Like the aforementioned shocking you. Or sneaking up on you.
After returning from a particularly longand boring mission of information retrieval, you decided to unwind with a Brated horror movie and a bowl of popcorn, curled up under layers of Amelie’sknitted blankets. You could hear Sombra in her room, typing away, during thequieter moments of the movie. But other than that, you weren’t aware of anyoneelse being home.
Until pinpricks of cold seeped through theblankets. You twisted away, looking over the back of the couch, half expectingto find Gabriel looming there. Instead, you found the distant wall and emptyspace. You frowned and returned your focus to the movie. The protagonist wascreeping through the house now, the music low and slowly building. You popped afew pieces of popcorn in your mouth as the anxiety built in you. You knew themonster was going to just appear. You knew it. But you didn’t know when.
“Boo.”
The word was whispered in your ear as thingtendrils of cold brushed against your neck. You screamed and tossed the bowlinto the air, scrambling out of your seat, reaching for a magazine that wasleft on the coffee table. Gabriel was doubled over the couch, face buried intothe cushions, shoulders shaking with silent laughter.
“I coulda told you he was gonna do that,”Sombra called from her room. You threw the magazine you had picked up at herdoor, which brought an amused bark of laughter from her.
“Why did you do that?!” you whined. Gabrielfinally lifted his head from the pillows. The smoke he was known for wascreeping back towards his face, filling in gaps around his jaw that had splitfrom his laughter. He was grinning at you.
“I couldn’t help it,” he said.
