“Amelia, why the hell didn’t you tell me you were pregnant, I mean I know that we haven’t been in communications for a while but this hardly counts as something small. Amelia…” Mrs Shepherd continued to ramble on, much in the way that Amelia usually did. However Amelia was silent, leaning heavily into Owen as he guided her through their lounge, unsure where to take her, to the couch or to bed.
Her eyes were closed, as if she were trying to block out her mother, and her free hand encircled her stomach. Nausea hung at the back of her throat, heavy on her chest. Her mother continued to ramble on, following them towards their bedroom.
Amelia inhaled and shook her head, thinking ‘please, please stop mom’. Her mom followed them all the way into their bedroom, and stood at the end of the bed, finally quieting to watch Owen helping her daughter onto the bed. Amelia finally saw the window to speak and sighed, “Mom… it’s more complicated… It’s” she sighed again, closing her eyes, rubbing her face with her hand.
Mrs Shepherd frowned, shaking her head in disbelief, “Amelia it’s not, you should have...”
“Mom! Please… just… can we just…” Amelia looked up, eyes watering, “I just need a minute to… get my head, just…”
Her moms face softened, and she sank in her posture, scanning her eyes over Amelia. She nodded, tears in her own eyes. She met Owen’s gaze and suddenly felt horrible, having just yelled at her struggling daughter for five minutes. She nodded, watching Owen help Amelia sit up and position pillows around her back.
She stood still at the end of the bed, worry, and guilt morphing her face. “Alright” Owen uttered, brushing back Amelia’s hair, Amelia nodded, reaching for his hand and squeezing it momentarily. Mrs Shepherd watched their interaction and felt guilt grip her tighter.
“I’ll be back in a bit” Owen said, glancing up at Mrs Shepherd before leaving.
Amelia sat with her head resting against the headboard, eyes closed, hands running slowly over her stomach, trying to calm the movements of the babies, who’d started kicking up a storm the moment she saw her mother. She felt her mother's eyes on her and opened hers, meeting her gaze. She stood awkwardly, arms wrapped around herself. Amelia took a deep breath, and pat the space next to her, tilting her head.
They sat in silence, Amelia continuing to breathe evenly, hands continuing her administrations of her bump. “You must be due soon, no?”
Amelia chuckled softly, closing her eyes again, “nope… I have another two or so months to go”
“Really? Wow” they fell silent again. Mrs Shepherd ran her eyes over Amelia and frowned, confused by her size, as Amelia plucked up the energy to talk to her.
“There’s two in here” She said, opening her eyes to catch her mother’s reaction.
“Twins, you’re having twins?” her tone rose, as did her brows.
Amelia smiled, settling her head back and closing her eyes again. Mrs Shepherd, peered down at her daughter’s stomach in awe.
“I…. I’m sorry Amelia” She started, becoming tense. Amelia’s smile faded, but she continued her even breaths, and her soothing hand motions. Her mother, watched her as she continued. “I was wrong, about you… getting married, I should have been there, I… seeing you with him, with Major Hunt”
“You can call him Owen”
“Owen, I’m sorry… I was wrong”
“It’s fine”
“No, it… it isn’t, please just let me make it up to you? To… to do that I need you to let me be in your life, please Amelia”
Amelia bit her bottom lip and squeezed her eyes shut harder, breathing becoming more erratic, she inhaled quickly and deeply, breathing even again. “Shhh now” she muttered to the babies, stilling her hands, pouting. “Mom, I… I don’t know… this is too much right now”
“Amelia, it’s simple you just…”
“No mom, it’s not, I can’t just forgive you just like that…. You missed something that…. That was important to me Mom, and I was on my own, with no family… and you just…. You just…. God damnit!” she yelled and curled over herself, clutching her stomach.
Mrs Shepherds eyes widened and she sat up, sitting on her knees, “Amelia… Amelia what is it…”
“No it’s… damn it” Amelia shook her head, closing her eyes. She fidgeted in her spot, trying to find a more comfortable position.
“Major Hu…. Owen!” Mrs Shepherd called out, leaning towards her daughter but stopping just beside her.
Owen ran in, brows furrowing, speeding to Amelia’s side, Jilly ran in with him, standing beside him, resting her chin on the mattress.
“Hey, hey, what is it? talk to me” Amelia shook her head, quickly grasping Owen’s hand and pushing it towards her lower spine. Owen sighed, and perched on the edge of the bed, nodding and understanding.
He knead into her muscles, looking up to Mrs Shepherd, taking in her worried expression. “She’s having a false contraction” he told her, frowning slightly.
Amelia leaned against Owen, bathing in the comfort of his presence beside her, breathing lengithly through pouted lips.
Mrs Shepherd nodded, shifting backwards slightly, a tear stringing from her eye. “I’m sorry, I’ll… Amelia, I never meant to…” she struggled for words, shaking her head.
“Mom… don’t, It’s okay Mom, its...”
“Amelia, I think you should take a nap, they’re moving like crazy, and this day…” Owen uttered softly, meeting Amelia’s tired, teary gaze. Her contraction slowly ceased and she nodded, laying her hand over Owens where it rest against her stomach.
“Alright?”
“Okay…” she mumbled, inhaling again, as deep as her diminished lung capacity would allow for.
“Mrs Shepherd… would you like some tea, something to eat?” He said, standing up. Mrs Shepherd nodded sharply and shifted off of the bed. “Sure… I’ll see you in a bit?”
She said, pausing at the door, looking back at her daughter. Amelia simply nodded, closing her eyes and turning onto her side.
“So, Owen…. How… how did you and Amelia meet?”
“Um, we met through work… just kinda forming a connection over time, I was friends with Derek” Owen said, busying himself making tea and a sandwich. Mrs Shepherd nodded, clasping her hands in her lap. “So how long…”
“Listen, Mrs Shepherd, I know you love your daughter, and I know from what Amelia has told me that your relationship hasn’t always been so… peaceful, but… Amelia needs peaceful right now. Can… can you please just go about this… situation, in a way that’s not going to, to…”
“I get it, and yes, I… yes, you know, I think this has already been a lot… I’ll go find a hotel and come back tomorrow, will you be home” She said, standing up.
Owen’s posture sank, and he sighed, “No, I mean, yes, Amelia’s on leave… just at least have your tea first, and eat some food, Amelia will be feeling better once she’s woken up, and she won’t like it if you’ve left.”
Mrs Shepherd pursed her lips and nodded, glancing down at her feet. She shook her head, eyes welling with tears. “I don’t know what to do… to get her to forgive me.”
Owen frowned, bringing her the food and drink he’d prepared, lolling his head to indicate that they should move into the lounge. They sat on the couch, “You hurt her, you just need to understand. This kind of…. thing, it just takes time”
Mrs Shepherd sighed sadly and took a bite of the sandwich.
“You need to have more faith in her”
“I do, Major... Owen, I do have faith in her”
“That was what stopped you from coming to the wedding, you thought she had relapsed, you can’t do that”
“You don’t understand… With Amy it’s…”
“No, I do… you can’t keep reminding her of all the times she’s made mistakes, not when she’s good, when she’s trying to move forward. She does it to herself all the time, that’s what causes her hesitance, and fear, she’s scared of making the same mistakes, she doesn’t need to be reminded. You’re her mother and now you just need to be there for her… that’s what she needs…. Okay, she needs to not feel alone”
Mrs Shepherd nodded, pressing her lips together. “You’re right… I don’t get to see her, very much, so I just remember what she used to be like, not…”
Owen nodded, “I’m just going to check on her, you can… turn on the TV if you like”
Owen climbed, carefully, onto the bed, lying down facing Amelia. She opened her eyes as soon as he settled beside her. “Hey you…” he whispered, resting his hand against her bump, finding more stillness than he’d felt earlier. “And you two” he continued, “have you been able to sleep?”
Amelia shook her head softly, “but the rest has helped, I felt like everything was spinning… the babies were going crazy”
“They’re calmer now” Owen said, lifting up her shirt to rest skin against skin.
“I had a chat with your mom” Amelia groaned at this, closing her eyes. “She’s sorry.”
“I know… I know she is” Amelia said, turning her face towards the ceiling, closing her eyes.
“She knows what she’s done”
“I know….” she looked back to him, meeting his eyes.
Owen nodded, smiling a little, “You hungry?” he said, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to her forehead.
Amelia hummed, smirking. “Yes” She said, pulling his lips to hers, she kissed him hard.
Owen pulled back to take a breath and chuckled. “For food Amelia, are you hungry for food? Your mom is just outside”
Amelia whined, “fine” flopping onto her back and shifting her legs over the side of the bed. “Sit me up husband” she ordered him, smiling, lying haphazardly with her arms and legs out in front of her.
“Yes your majesty…” he said, sitting up, pulling her with him.
“What ‘s my mom doing? Criticizing our decor, writing a report? Sending it back to my sisters?”
Owen chuckled, rolling his eyes, helping her stand. “She’s eating a damn sandwich Amelia”
Amelia nodded, holding his hand and pulling him to the closet, Owen frowned, “Amelia, why are you…”
“My legs feel like jelly, will you just stand there while I change?” she smirked, pulling her shirt up and over her head, her already bedraggled hair fluffed up further, “or do you have commitments other than watching me get naked then unnaked while not falling over?”
Owen grinned, shaking his head and leaning against the wall.
“That’s it, yeah put it on… yeah right there” Owen quipped, smirking, eyes bright.
“Shut up Owen” she said, shaking her head, putting on her support belt, unbuttoning her pants.
“Oh yeah, pull down your trousers”
“Shut...up” She lifted one foot out of her pants and wobbled, reaching for the shelf, but Owen reached her before. She dropped her foot and sighed, leaning against Owen, “oh yeah, lean harder, that’s the spot” Owen teased. Amelia slapped his thigh, shaking her head.
“OH” he gasped, groaning sexually before chuckling.
“”OWEN!!” Amelia scorned him, standing up straight, glaring at him. Owen only smiled wider and kissed her, singing “Love you…”
“Yeah, love you too” she said, smiling lopsidedly, stepping out of her trousers, “Now, throw me those sweats, we need to get out there before she gives up on me again”
Owen sighed, passing them to her.
“Amelia… you both need to give each other a chance, if… if you want this to work”
Amelia nodded slowly, taking the pants and a t-shirt out to the bedroom, sitting on the bed.
“I don’t want to give her a chance if she’s just going to…”
“You have to trust her, she’s your mother, and… you know, it’s not just you now, you have me, and you have our little ladies”
Amelia nodded again, pulling her t-shirt over her bump. She sat quietly for a moment, staring down. Owen moved to stand in front of her. “Would you help me put my pants on please? I can’t see or reach my feet” She passed them to him, fluttering her eyes.
He sank to his knees, speaking “Yes me-lady” as he pulled each pant leg over her feet. She stood up, and tugged them up the rest of the way, stating “food” before walking past him out the door.
“Hey, mom”
Mrs Shepherd leapt up and span to face Amelia, “Hi, are you… you feeling better?”
Amelia smiled, taking a deep breath and moving around the sofa, placing her hands on her hips. “I am… thank you” Amelia nodded, looking down at herself.
“Good, good, sit down, please”
They sat at either side of the couch, facing one another.
“You’re such a tiny person, it’s odd to see you… so” she gestured with her hand.
Amelia smirked, cheeks dimpling, “so round, I know. It feels odd too sometimes.”
“You were always the smallest, even as a baby, not like your sisters, or Derek”
“Mom, I want to forgive you. Just… just promise me you won’t do this again?” Amelia blurted, done with small talk. Her question caused a pause.
“Oh Amelia, I promise” her eyes welled and she shifted forward. Amelia crossed her arms across her bump and held herself. Her mother spoke again, “I promise” she began to cry, and moved further towards Amelia, pausing with her arms raised.
Amelia nodded, tears stringing from her eyes at the motion. Mrs Shepherd wept and pulled her daughter into her arms, wrapping her up and holding her tight.
Amelia held her breath for a moment, “I had a baby in LA, and he died,” Her mother stopped breathing, frowning, her body became rigid, Amelia continued, “he, I held him and he lived for forty three minutes and he… he died, and so did his dad, we didn’t know I was pregnant, he… aspirated on his own vomit, I woke up and he was dead”
Her mother pulled back, and opened her mouth to speak, but Amelia continued, “And I had a brain tumour, we found out this year, it’s gone now, but… yeah”
Her mother continued to cry, covering her mouth with her hand.
Owen entered then, standing behind them. “We’re having twin girls” Amelia said, taking Owen’s hand. Mrs Shepherd pressed her lips together, eyes wide and wet. Amelia squeezed Owens hand.
“Mrs Shepherd have some of your tea… maybe” She nodded, turning in her seat as Owen ran around the couch to pass her the tea. “Owen will you get me some? Please” Amelia asked, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand.
Owen nodded, brushing her shoulder. Mrs Shepherds hands shook, as she brought her mug to her lips.
“Mom, I know it’s a lot… but I’m here now, and I’m happy, and healthy”
“Amelia, why…” She stopped, leaning forward and placing the mug down, closing her eyes. “I’m so… You’re here” She nodded, turning then and pulling Amelia into her embrace again.
Amelia felt warmth build in her chest and the babies both increased their movement. She took her mother’s hand and placed it against her stomach, letting her feel the strong turnings. Amelia closed her eyes, inhaling, “you still wear the same perfume” Amelia uttered, smiling tearfully.
“It’s my favourite, you know that” Her mother replied, combing Amelia’s hair with her fingertips. “I love you so much Amy, so so much” Amelia nodded against her mothers chest,
“how long are you here?”
“I haven’t booked my return yet, I was hoping a couple of weeks, there’s a bed and breakfast nearby” she said, Amelia sat up.

Amelia roused from sleep easily. In that way only possible when you have slept until you can’t anymore. It was always in the early hour that she found herself feeling most content, when the drowsiness still hazed her ability to think, her mind would be quiet; only having first thoughts, like ‘warm’ at the feeling of her body amongst the covers. She’d usually wonder of the time, observing where the sun was hitting the wall. On most mornings, ‘Owen’ would come to mind. She open her eyes to find him still sleeping, she’d rest in her love for him, eyeing his expression as he slept, his smell, his warmth.
Though the past week or so she’d been waking up alone. He’d wake first, having all the same first thoughts and he’d leave her to sleep.
The sun sat further across the wall than she had grown accustomed to. ‘It must be late’ she thought, brows furrowing as she turned onto her side, gazing out of the window. She heard Owen enter the room, his breathing was heavy, she thought he must have been running, as he often did in the mornings. She could hear him walking around the room, she smiled at how painstakingly slow he was going, trying to be quiet.
“Owen” she said, voice husky from sleep. His head peeked into her line of sight. “Hi” he said, a bashful smile painting his face. “You’re awake” he said and she nodded, rolling onto her back to look at him. She beamed at him. “You look hot” she said, and he looked down at himself, ‘i’m not sweating’ he thought. “I was running” he pulled at his shirt at the back to see if it stuck.
When he met her eyes again, he caught onto what she meant. “Oh” he mouthed. She giggled as he crawled up the bed, dropping kisses as he went, finally landing on her mouth. She laughed into the kiss as his fingertips danced at her sides, her knees came up either side of him, bracketing his hips, she pulled at his shirt.
He groaned, leaning heavily into the kiss before pulling away. She huffed, childishly pouting, a smile in her eyes. He smiled at her, running his hand along her waist. “As much as you know I would love to.” he kissed her with every word, pausing to continue talking; “I said I’d go to the hospital, and I came to see if you wanted to… if you were awake… which you are.”
She held onto him tight, compressing him against her. “We can be quick” she whispered longingly, wrapping her legs around him tighter. He kissed her hard and paused, face hovering over hers. She was flushed, cheeks rosy. Her lips were scarlet and full, something that seemed exacerbated by the pregnancy, and drove him wild. Her ocean eyes were filled with lust, also seemingly exacerbated by her pregnancy. At fifteen weeks, her sickness had passed and her libido had rocketed.
“Please” she uttered, smiling brightly, knowing he couldn’t resist her begging. He chuckled, shaking his head and relenting, sinking his lips against her neck. Amelia went to work on his trousers, tugging them down as far as she could. Owen continued to drop kisses against her soft skin, nibbling and sucking. He sat up, pulling the hem of her vest up and over her head. Leaving her in only a pair of panties. He pulled off his shirt, and Amelia stripped off her underwear.
Owen sat above her, staring; Amelia lie panting, her ample chest rising and falling with every heavy breath. “Owen” she begged, grasping his hands and moving them to her breasts, encouraging his soft caress. “You’re so beautiful” he sighed, running his fingertips over the round curve of her stomach before pulling her up towards him. With her legs circling his hips, his hands denting the soft flesh of her back, he entered her. They sighed unanimously and sought each other lips, capturing them, kneading like clay.
Amelia closed her eyes in bliss, head lolling back and she felt herself rolling towards her edge quicker than she ever had before. She tipped over into ecstasy first, quivering in Owen’s arms before collapsing against him. Her forehead rest against his shoulder, she pressed firm, warm kisses against his collarbone as he finished.
They sat there, in the center of their bed, embracing with heavy arms. “Okay?” Owen asked, lowering Amelia onto her back. She smiled softly and nodded, “Yes” she said. Owen sank down at her side and pulled the duvet up just below her stomach, running his hand firmly across it. She sighed comfortably and turned her head under his chin. “We can say I had morning sickness” Amelia spoke softly, her breath tickling Owens chest. He hummed, continuing his hand across her small bump. “I still can’t believe our baby is in there” Owen whispered, eyeing her bump with tearful awe. Amelia smiled, turning her head to follow his gaze. He stretched his large hand across the expanse of her stomach.
“I can, I’m reminded all the time” she chuckled, turning into his side, depressing kisses against his chest, taking in his musky scent. She seemed to be addicted to it, so much that she found herself craving and seeking him. He pulled her against him firmly, hand against the small of her back. “We should get going soon, and you need to eat”
“Yeah, yeah” Amelia spoke sleepily.
“Hello, my name is Dr Shepherd, what’s yours?” Amelia sat down in front of a little boy, his hair was a muddy blond and stuck out all over the place. He looked to the women who sat in a chair close by and she nodded, smiling. “Josh” he said sweetly.
Amelia smiled, “Okay Josh, well I’m a doctor who knows everything there is to know about everything in here” she pointed to his head. “So if you have anything weird that happens there I can help” His face lit up and he looked back to the women.
“I hit my head, I fell” he said, he reached behind his head and pulled his hand back, “look its red back there” he said, showing her his fingers, dotted with blood.
Amelia nodded. “Oh dear, well you’re lucky because me and my friends can fix that” She said, standing up and pulling out her new flashlight. Owen entered then, pushing a trolley of supplies. Josh’s eyes darted to him, “Is he your friend?” He asked, eyes flitting back to Amelia. Amelia smiled, “He is Josh, we’re married” She said, pointing back to her flashlight, indicating that she needed his focus back. He rose his eyebrows, still looking at Owen, he giggled, wriggling in his seat.
“Josh look here” Amelia said, smirking at the boy. Owen walked to stand beside Amelia. “Hi Josh, my name is Dr Hunt, I’m going to fix this little cut back here” Owen said, calmly. The little boy smiled, putting his thumb up, still following Amelia’s orders. “You are being so brave Josh” Amelia said, he grinned bashfully and shrugged his shoulders.
“Okay Josh, you’re going to feel a little stinging and then no pain at all okay?” Owen said, Amelia finished her exam and crouched slightly, nodding and meeting Josh’s eyes, “Nearly done” Amelia said, she turned to the women and indicated with a tip of her head that she could come over.
“Who’s this?” Amelia said to the boy.
“Jane, she my auntie, daddy’s sister” he said, happily. “She’s a little bit like my mommy now” he said, smile faltering slightly. Amelia nodded. Feeling her chest constrict slightly looking into the boy’s eyes, seeing sadness there. “How old are you?” Amelia asked, trying to distract him after a nod from Owen. “I’m six, and a half” he said, before wincing, squeezing his aunt’s hand.
“That bits all done now” Owen said, glancing at Amelia before picking up the glue.
“Do you have many friends here?” Amelia said, sitting back down on the stool and fixing her posture. He twisted his lips, before pouting, “not really, all of the children are either babies or older, they won’t play with me” he said. Amelia grinned, raising her eyebrows.
“Well I know a little girl about your age, her name is Ray, and she’s pretty cool, she’s starting at the school soon, but I’m sure she’d like to play with you?”
Josh smiled toothily and swung his legs. “All done!” Owen said, rounding the table.
“Can we play today?” Josh said hopefully, looking between his aunt and Amelia. Amelia pursed her lips.
“Tomorrow, I need you to rest today, so your head can be better” she said. Josh slumped and nodded. “ but you can come tomorrow?” Amelia said, part asking Jane who nodded. “You can come and knock for her in the morning, do you have a bike?”
Josh became energised again and nodded frantically “Yeah!!!” he said. Amelia pulled out her notepad and wrote down their block number on it, passing it to the boy.
“That’s our block, come after nine yeah?” he nodded, wiggling in his seat again. Amelia stood, grinning at the excited boy and up at Owen.
“Okay well see you tomorrow” she helped him down from the bed and he bounced over to her, hugging around her stomach and then to his aunt, holding onto her as she moved towards the door.
“Nice you meet you Dr’s” she said. The nodded kindly and waved, watching them leave.
Owen smiled toothily at Amelia, “Ray is going to be excited, she’s been wanting to go out on her bike” he said. Amelia nodded, slotting her notebook back into her pocket and sighing.
“Any other patients?” Amelia asked Owen as they walked out to the hall.
“Nope” Owen said, folded his arms. Amelia groaned, throwing her head back. “What’s wrong?” Owen asked, watching her check her watch and pout her lips. The hospital was quiet, and where this meant they could be expecting a rush when at Grey Sloan, it meant the opposite in the military hospital.
“Nothing” she mumbled. Owen smirked, internally chuckling at her childish demeanor.
“Amelia” he prompted, lightly bumping into her side. She looked up at him, with wide, despairing eyes.
“I’m tired… and horny, and there’s nothing to do” she droned, frowning in frustration. “How is it that you can be in pain and horny at the same time?” she shook her head as she spoke, waving her hands out in front of her.
“Pain?” he said, skimming past the other counterpart to her mood. She huffed, sinking in her posture and pushing her hands into her pockets. “My back hurts” she said, glancing down at her watch again.
“How long have we got?” he asked, reaching the staff room and holding the door for her to enter.
“Half an hour” she flopped down onto the couch, groaning, throwing her feet up onto the coffee table and relaxing her entire body, eyes closed. Owen laughed aloud, busying his hands making a coffee and a tea.
“Hey don’t laugh at me, this is your fault” she said, mellifluously. He calmly made the drinks and walked to her, setting them down on the table. “If I remember correctly you were there taking part too” he said, sitting beside her and laying his arm along the back of the sofa behind her. “Kiss me” she simply said, her pleading eyes meeting his.
“no… “ he replied carefully, she opened her mouth and then whined. “You’ll want more. You can’t get enough of me!” he said, leaning to take a sip of his coffee.
“I won’t, I promise, just give me ten seconds” she said, turning towards him slightly. He twisted his lips, half smiling. “What if someone walks in?” She frowned at this, smiling with her eyes.
“Owen how many people are in this ER right now?” she asked, knowing full well the answer was two, she and him. He pursed his lips, as if he had to think about it. “Ten seconds” she continued. He thought for a second more,”Screw it” he breathed, enclosing her with his arms, pulling her across his lap and kissing her hard, the way he knew she needed it. She mewled, caressing his arm with one hand, the other was lost in his hair. His free hand worked up under her shirt, dancing across her skin in flurries making her shiver. After more than ten second Owen pulled away, relaxing his hold so that her torso rest against his legs.
“Ten seconds up” he panted, out of breath. She smiled, somewhat satisfied and closed her eyes, running her hands down and over her stomach, over where Owen’s hand possessively laid. Owen lifted her wrist and observed the time. “We’re off shift now” He said pulling his hand out from under her shirt, smoothing down the fabric. They wore green scrubs, a color neither had worn before, but they both appreciated the normality that wearing them provided.
“Let’s…go…Home?” Amelia said, finding herself almost automatically saying it but found herself surprised. Owen smiled, feeling confused by the idea too, he looked up to the ceiling.
“Yeah, I guess we could call it that”
“Help me up” she grunted as she strained to sit up, moving faster once Owen’s hands aided her.
“Oh great! I was going to put this in the fridge but you could have it now!” Evelyn said cheerily, eyeing Owen and Amelia as they entered the living room. “Amelia” she said, picking up a pitcher of something gruesome looking and a glass walking it to the table and setting it down. Amelia walked cautiously over and dropped her bag on the chair.
“Evelyn what is…” Amelia began but Megan interrupted, leaving her and her mother’s bedroom, “Don’t ask Amelia” she said, cringing and walking to the fridge. “It’s nothing untoward dear just a take on something my mother would make me when I was pregnant. I checked with Nina and even added some things that she recommended. It’s very nutritious and good for the baby” she said, pouring the green/brown gloopy smoothie into a glass. Amelia glanced around, meeting everyone’s eyes, each expression said ‘I’m glad I’m not you’ except Evelyn’s, whose was a picture of kindness and hope.
“It doesn’t taste so bad dear… and both…both my babies were strong as ox’s” she said sweetly, lifting the glass and holding it out towards Amelia. Amelia smiled genuinely, appreciating the thought that had gone into the gesture, wishing only that the drink looked more advertising. Amelia looked down at the drink, feeling Owen move up behind her and brush his open hand against the small of her back, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.
Megan settled at the table, and Ginny instantly jumped up onto her lap, coiling up and dozing off.
“Oh I’m sorry about the taste dear” Evelyn said, observing the cringe that swept across her daughter in law’ features as she took a gulp. Amelia paused, clenching her jaw, fighting a gag, “it’s… it’s” she stuttered, “It’s okay, the texture is just… odd” Amelia continued, finding herself taking another huge gulp, trying to down it all quickly. Megan chuckled, “Thank you Amelia for getting pregnant before me and saving me from having to be the first to try this” Megan laughed, taking in a spoonful of yogurt. Amelia sat down opposite her and smirked, shaking her head.
“I’ll still make you it!” Evelyn said, turning back to the stove where she had a huge pot steaming.
“Maybe but I won’t be drinking it” She said, dipping her spoon back into her bowl only to have the bowl swiped away by her mother. “Dinner is done” she said, smiling jovially at Megan. “Owen, Amelia would you like some, spaghetti?” she said. The pair nodded, and thanked her, settling down at the table.
“You know you don’t have to cook for everyone everyday Evelyn? Although it is lovely” Richard said, helping her lay out all the plates.
“Oh, I wouldn’t have it any other way, I finish at the school at two and then I've nothing else to do” she had started assisting at the school as her job, it was mainly just supervising play so it wasn’t very tasking.
The sun was setting outside and the room was tinted pink. Alex entered and clicked on two lamps, jumping up onto a stool beside Arizona. Ray appeared at the end of the hall then, helping Ellis walk. “Hey Ray… hello Ellis” Amelia said, warmly, her tone at saying Ellis’ name making her smile broadly. “Mommy” Ellis babbled, in reaching distance now from where Amelia sat. Ray grinned up at Amelia, unknowing of the significance of the word. Amelia’s face fell briefly, before she regained herself and lifted Ellis onto her lap. She met Owens eyes and shuddered slightly. She didn’t know how to approach the situation with Ellis, she was so little, and the situation was so big.
“There we go sweetie” Evelyn said, sitting Ellis’s highchair between Amelia and Owen, placing a small bowl of spaghetti on it’s table, one they all knew would be all over Ellis in a matter of moments.
The room silenced for a while, as everyone tucked into the food. Evelyn smiled, looking around, taking the silence as a sign that they were enjoying the food. Conversation slowly filtered in, about everyone’s days. Amelia told Ray about her play date, Ray jumped out of her seat at that, face alight with excitement. “Eat your food Ray” is all Amelia said, still grinning. Ray smiled too, silencing and tucking back into her food. “Will he bring his bike?” Ray whispered. Amelia nodded, chuckling.
“I feel more tired than I would after a full-on shift at Grey Sloan” Owen groaned, rolling over to his side of the bed, settling on his back with a long sigh. “Doing nothing is tiring” Amelia switched off the light and perched at edge of the bed pulling off her jumper. The natural light of the moon rolled through the blinds and painted her silhouette. Her hair had grown long and sat, dark, against the white cotton vest she wore. She moaned softly as she pulled off her socks. Her moan of discomfort morphed to one of pleasure as Owen moved up behind her and worked his hands into the tense muscles at her lower back. “Oh Owen” she gasped, relaxing back against him as shivers made her shudder. He laughed breathily and burrowed her face into the crook of her neck, absorbing her smell, and dusting kisses against her skin, all the while continuing to knead his strong hands into her back. In a short time her breathing was so even and she had relaxed so much that Owen thought she’d dozed off. He kept his hands moving however, for a few minutes at least.
He circled his hands around her limp, reclined form and smoothed his hands across her firm bump. He chortled in astonishment, shaking his head softly, the bulge seemed to have grown since the morning. He pulled up her vest to reveal it to the moonlight and Amelia jolted awake. “Owen?” She uttered, confused. She tensed momentarily before feeling his presence around her and relaxing once more. “This feels like its grown since this morning” he said, running his rough hands across it. Amelia simply sighed and pulled his hands to the underside of her bump, languidly running her palms against the backs of his. “Bed” she mumbled, lolling her head back until she could glimpse his eyes. “Yes” he replied, easing backwards, pulling her with him.
Outside their room, everyone but the children and Evelyn were still up, their chatter was like white noise to Amelia and Owen. It was still reasonably early, but after dinner the pair had pushed on through their exhaustion for only an hour before relenting to it.
“I need to close the blind” Owen whispered, entwined in Amelia.
“Leave it” Amelia said, turning slowly in his arms, onto her back, and then to face him slightly. “I like the moon” she said, allowing Owen to tuck a pillow behind and under her. “Have you been reading those leaflets Nina gave us?” Amelia spoke against his neck.
“I did, but it was nothing I hadn’t learnt in med school… it’s bad to sleep on your back” he said, sleepily, eyes drifting open and closed. Amelia hummed, sinking into sleep.

The continuous drum of the monitors had become white noise to Owen and Amelia. Megan was being kept unconscious until she recovered from her surgeries. Hours had turned, unnoticably, to days and then to weeks and they had now lost count of how long they had sat at her side. It was late, the sun had set two naps ago and Amelia was slipping into her third, head propped up on her fist.
Owen, inhaled deeply, face twisting in reaction to a sick feeling that rippled up from his unsettled stomach. He cleared his throat softly and scanned his eyes over Amelia who sat beside him, swaying to stay propped up on her hand. Owen groaned, leaning forward in his chair, feeling flushed and chilled all at once.
His stomach lurched painfully and he surged forward in his seat, freezing with his hands fanned out across his mouth. “Owen…” Amelia opened her eyes slightly, grimacing. She stared, unsure of what was going on. “I’m…. gonna…” Owen stuttered out. She sat up straight, realization dawning on her. “O, are you sick?” she shifted forward on her chair, and ran her hand across his back.
He grunted and nodded, glancing at her momentarily before relenting to the sickness and vomiting on the floor. “Oh… okay, hold on” Amelia shot up from her chair and grabbed a sick bowl, holding it under his face and guiding his hands to hold it. “Melia” he managed to say before throwing up again.
“Okay… up” she said, holding his torso firmly and pulling him up. He was shaky, “Sit down… that’s it” she sighed, moving him into her seat. She pushed him by the shoulder against the back of the chair. He looked up at her, out of breath, his eyes were lidded. She stood between his legs, worry contorting her face. She stooped down, pressing her hand against his forehead briefly before smoothing his hair back.
“You’re burning up” she shook her head, placing her palms against his cheeks, looking into his eyes. He shut his eyes, neck slackening against the back of the chair.
Amelia nodded, distractedly running her hands over his shoulders, looking down at the full cardboard bowl in his lap. She carefully took it from him, taking an empty bowl from underneath it, handing it to him. “I’ll be right back… just sit back…“
She walked the bowl out into the hall dropping it into the bin. She squirted antibac onto her palm and twisted her hands together. “Amelia… I don’t feel… good” Owen staggered out into the hall dizzily, his face pallid as paper. Amelia surged towards him, wrapping her arms around his torso. “I… think I need to go home” he said. Amelia nodded, eyes wide, “Okay… okay… come on” she said, supporting his weight, wobbling slightly as they walked. He was hot in her arms.
Owen stepped from the car before Amelia could even turn off the engine, falling to his knees in the gravel and expelling the contents of his stomach onto the grass at the side of their drive. Amelia lept from the car and sped around to him, muttering “What the hell” as she went. “It’s okay, you’re okay” she sighed, lowering down at Owens side and dragging her fingertips up and down his spine. He sank back against her, panting, tearfully. “Hey… it’s alright… this is probably a twenty four hour thing O” Amelia uttered softly, sweeping his hair back. He huffed, nodding, “You shouldn’t… you’ll get sick” he stuttered out.
“None of that… I’ll be fine, come on let’s get you in” she said, standing, as she pressed a kiss against his clammy forehead. He wobbled dangerously once up, and Amelia held him steady, feet planted firmly into the ground, arms around him in a strong hug. He sagged in her arms briefly, holding onto Amelia with all his strength. “You’re okay” Amelia said, squeezing her eyes shut.
“Love you” he murmured. Amelia pursed her lips, letting herself relax into the embrace. He was getting delirious from the fever. He hadn’t told her he loved her in months. They hadn’t said a word regarding their feelings for months. “I know… and I love you” she said back, faintly. She didn’t think he’d remember these moments, and if he did, she didn’t care. “Come on…” She said, walking him blindly to their front door.
He said it again as she took off his shoes, and then again as she walked him to their bedroom, and again, and again. She’d give him a different answer every time, “I love you,” “I know,” “Yes, Owen,” “I know you do”
“I love you Amelia, my wife, my love, my one” he sang, as Amelia pulled a clean white t-shirt over his head, as he sat on their bed. He smiled up at her sheepishly, and she returned it. “Take these” she picked up the pills she’d laid down, and a glass of water.
“I feel sick” he said. Amelia nodded and moved her hand closer, indicating to him to take the pills. “My head hurts” he said, making no move to do as she asked.
She chuckled, “Owen take the pills” she ordered him. He gasped.
“Are you trying to drug me?” he asked her, somehow with a smile in his eyes.
She rolled her eyes, “Open” she ordered, holding the pills to his lips. His eyes fell shut and he opened his mouth wide, choking slightly on the water she fed him. Amelia pressed her palm to his cheek and he sighed, leaning into Amelia’s hand. He was still warm. “Lie down you” she said softly, pulling the bed covers to the end of the bed. She laughed at him, as he flopped onto his side and shuffled haphazardly to his pillows.
He flopped onto his back, an arm and a leg hanging over the side of the bed. Amelia left and returned with a damp cloth, climbing onto her side of the bed, stroking the cloth languidly along his arms, across his forehead and around his face. He cooed, contently, feeling all tension leave his fatigued body. “Don’t leave me on my own” he said, searching for her free hand. She ran her eyes over him, pressing her lips together. She sat the cloth on his forehead, and shuffled down, shimmying down until she could only see the silhouette of his profile, illuminated by his bedside light.
He carried her hand to his chest and pressed it flat there, where she could feel the vibrato of his heart, beating away. “I’m not going anywhere” she replied, moving close enough to feel the heat of his fever radiating against her. He hummed, smiling mindlessly, feeling himself drifting. “Love you” he murmured once more, falling asleep, feeling his wife’s soft lips against his shoulder.
SO! Here is this. I received an Anon prompt for an Apocalypse fic, which really sparked some inspiration because I, like many I’m sure, do have a good think about that sort of thing, due to current events!!
I’m not going to share the prompt because it will reveal spoilers! This might not be everyone’s cup of tea but what the hey, I’m loving writing it!! This will have multiple chapters. If you want anything in particular to go down let me know and I’ll see if I can fit it in :)

“Will somebody turn that down?” Amelia called over to the main desk, where a group of people were gathered around a television which boomed loudly. She gripped the door frame tightly as no one took notice of her request. Glancing into the patient room with a soft smile she spoke “Do you have any further questions?”
The patient, a young man she had been treating for some time, shook his head, smiling, although distracted by the sound of screaming overlapped by the monotone voice of a news broadcaster. Amelia nodded, glancing back out into the hall. She excused herself from the room, walking slowly across to join the crowd gathered around the television.
She quickly gave up trying to see the screen, not wanting to be crowded amidst the group, she stood at the back and listened. An odd sort of screaming was the most prevalent sound. She crossed her arms and looked down at her shoes, trying to filter out the sound in order to hear the drawling words of the newsreader. Before she could make anything out hands wrapped around her elbows. She looked up to see her husband stooping to her height. “Owen…?” she said, trying to read his expression. She could see fear, which confused her.
“Amelia… We…” he was guiding her down the hall.
“Owen… whats going on?”
“I think… I think we have to go… I don’t.” Amelia was shaking her head, but still let him lead her. He was doing so in such a domineering way that it was hard not to. “Owen… What do you mean?… Where… what?” she said, as he stopped and sped to stand directly in front of her. He pulled out his phone and showed her a video, placing his phone in her hands and cupping his around hers. “Wha…” she gasped. “Owen… OWEN” she screamed, trying hand him his phone back, but he held it in her grasp, the video showed a flock of people mauling a person like dogs.
Amelia looked up at Owen with teary eyes. She swallowed hard, feeling nausea wash over her. He pulled the phone away slightly to change the page and she pressed a hand to her chest. “Owen that’s… that’s just…” he moved the screen back so she could see it. It was the vice president. He was sweating, eyes wide in frantic panic. “This is an Emergency Alert. A worldwide pandemic has occurred. If you, or someone close to you expresses the symptoms of a fever, bloodshot eyes, pins and needles and/or numbness in regions of the body, along with nausea, sickness, dizziness, and headaches, then please secure yourself away from others. The disease is transmitted by transfer of fluids, so take necessary precautions to protect yourself. This is a matter of urgency. If you are at home, stay there. If you are not somewhere secure, then get somewhere secure. Limit your contact with other people. Do not try to get to hospitals…” Both Amelia and Owens focus was pulled from the screen by a ruckus behind them.
Amelia turned quickly at the sound of screaming. She had stepped sharply towards it when Owen grabbed her arm. She looked back at him, gasping. The screams echoing down the hall turned turned wiry and grotesque and Amelia backed up, unsteadily, against Owen, who too began to back up. “Let’s go” He said, tugging her towards the stairwell.
“They’re going to lock down the hospital… to contain the disease, the ER is the last exit open” he said, panting as they sped down the stairwell.
“What!?” Amelia screamed, skipping steps to keep up with Owen.
“I got Megan ready, she’s in a side room by the ER” He said, shoving Amelia through a door.
“But… our stuff, we need…”
“I bust your locker door open…” he said, looking down to meet Amelia’s frightened gaze. “Your stuff is with Megan, and I’ve got some supplies together.” Amelia sped alongside him, head down, an arm wrapped across her body, hand tightly gripping his.
“Amelia…” she heard her name being called. Meredith was sprinting up behind them, Ellis, red faced and wailing, in her arms. Webber and Riggs, followed. None of them stopped. All moving with purpose towards the ER Exit.
“It’s okay Megan, we’ll be out of this soon… It’s okay” Amelia could hear Owens soft assurances as she led everyone through the ER. There were people crowding at the exit, out the door. They all made a chain as the pushed past people, heads down. Moving free of the doors, the cool air hit them. Outside soldiers were lined around the exit, shouting sternly to go back inside. She felt Owen and Megan press into her back as she stopped, unsure of where to go. Ellis could be heard screeching behind her too.
The group took in the scene, much as they’d been trained to do. Solders were bellowing, pointing weapons at the crowd, who were crying, tears shining in the light of the evening sun. The sound of the desperate shrieks washed into one like a chorus. The distant crack of gunfire rang in the air.
Amelia pulled her white coat tight around her stomach, inhaling with a calmness she had no right to posses. “Amelia…” she heard, and she turned sharply. Arizona was pressed against the wall at the very edge of the line of soldiers, people were filtering out beside her. Amelia gasped, moving quickly to her and pulling the others behind her. Arizona pulled her through. Amelia turned and pulled Megan and Owen through, Webber following closely behind.
Meredith was so set of moving through that she failed to notice the eyes of a soldier on her. His steps became low as he quickly moved, his large chest blocking her way like a solid wall. She looked up at him, eyes pleading. “Please…” she said, as quiet as a whisper. She could only see the shadow of his eyes, the rest of his face was covered. Meredith felt a sinking feeling. She looked to Ellis, she was crying still, but the sound was awash amongst all the others. She was crying so much that her eyes were squeezed closed, head flung back, mouth open wide. Meredith pressed a soft kiss against her hot cheek and inhaled her scent, “this isn’t my Baby.”
Amelia screamed at Owen to wait, and he ceased the tugging of her arm. “Please… this is her baby…” Meredith nodded to Amelia. “Please let her take her baby… It’s not mine, she’s not mine” Meredith was crying, struggling to form the words, her voice shredded with sadness. “Please…”
“Please…” Amelia said, tugging on the soldier’s arm, eyes locked with Meredith’s. There was a pregnant pause, before he reached for Ellis, large hands enveloping her and pulling her from Meredith’s arms. Meredith kissed her swift as she went, whispering goodbye. The soldier, half turned, handing the child to Amelia, who held her close against her aching chest. Meredith backed up against Riggs as the soldiers swarmed in and raised their weapons, ordering everyone back inside.
Meredith held herself, eyes heavy with tears. She nodded to Amelia… Amelia nodded back, and then she was gone. Lost amongst the crowd moving back into the hospital.
“Amelia…” Owen turned her, and pulled her towards an ambulance. She held Ellis tightly, eyes down, letting Owen move her around, up into the vehicle, into a seat. The doors slammed powerfully behind them with a gust of wind that swept Ellis’ hair up and against Amelia’s cheek.
Ellis dropped her head into the crook of Amelia’s neck. She stared down at her hand resting against Ellis’ back, at her wedding ring glinting in the light of the ambulance. A seat belt was wrapped around her, she didn’t look up to see who by.
“Amelia…” the voice sounded distant. “Amelia.” The van started to move, she felt the force of the exceleration pushing her to the right. Owen’s hand came into her view, his ring ticking against hers. She looked up, meeting his sad blue eyes. His hand came up to caress her cheek. He smiled tightly. “You’re okay” he said. She inhaled sharply and then let out a steady breath. She looked around, seeing all the bags at her feet. Megan sat in the corner, eyes closed, forehead pressed to the wall. Richard sat at Amelia’s side, head tilted back, eyes to the ceiling, his hands were splayed on his knees. She looked to the front of the truck, seeing flashes of Arizona’s blonde hair. “Who…” Amelia began to speak without even realising. “Alex is driving…” Owen said, rocking with the motion of the van.
Owen observed Amelia, sitting stiffly, an expression of shock contorting her face. She held Ellis firmly. Her eyes were flitting around the place, finally settling on the window. “Guy’s…” Arizona called from the front. She was leaning from her chair, hair swinging back and forth as the van sped through the city. “We’re going to turn off the lights back there, to save the battery” as she spoke the van bounced over speed bumps, they fell into darkness then. Natural light softly poured in through the back windows in columns.
Owen followed Amelia’s gaze, looking to the sky. In his periphery he could see people running about the place. He looked to the sky. The sun was setting, light turning from orange to pink. Amelia’s eyes took on the most beautiful colour, a sort of sad turquoise. She moved her feet forward towards him, sitting them between his, feeling the warmth of his ankles against her legs. She sighed, meeting his eyes. The street lights came on, his hair flashed bright in their orange fluorescence. Amelia smiled sadly, dropping her head so her cheek rest against Ellis’s head.
The light of the street lamps rolled across the interior of the van as they passed them, their rhythm lulling everyone into a calmness, but nobody slept. They all rest in a state of thoughtfulness, eyes fixed on the darkening sky.
Owen comes home with a bean bag chair and Amelia gets stuck in it

“Amelia, isn’t that surgery a little long?” Owen was standing beside her gazing at the board. He squeezed the pen in his hand, watching Amelia roll her eyes. “No it isn’t” is all she said.
She kneaded her knuckles into the small of her back. Owen watched her intently as she read the board, she fidgeted, arching her back and rolling her shoulders. He looked down at her barely there bump. She felt his eyes on her and sighed. “Owen watching me every second of the day is starting to become very annoying” She said, turning to him, hands on her hips.
He ducked his head, folding his arms over his chest. “I get it Owen, I do, but please. You’re crowding me” she ran her fingers under the collar of his lab coat. “I… I, Amelia”
“At least… Try and do it without me noticing?” she brushed her palm down his arm and grasped his hand. He laughed, nodding.
“I’ll try…” He looked up at the board again. “Eight hours though Amelia… I really don’t think…”
“Owen…” She groaned letting go of his hand and walking over to the reception desk.
“Your back… and… and your feet” She stood, smirking down at the touch screen in her hand. She looked up at him. He smiled down at her. She gazed at him in silence. He shook his head leaning down to peck her on the lips. “I’ll be up in the gallery when I can be” he said.
“Mmmhmm” she turned and walked away.
There were a number of times during her surgery that she thought Owen may have been right. Towards the end her feet felt painfully hugged by her shoes, and her back was beginning to throb.
She closed her eyes briefly and breathed an even breath, pausing her work. She opened them and looked up at the gallery, meeting Owen’s gaze. She looked back at the patient instantly, the worry in Owens expression only making the pain worse.
“Dr Shepherd… Would you like me to close?” Edwards said, interrupting Amelia from her thoughts. Edwards had been watching her throughout, glancing up at Dr Hunt every time Amelia winced, or arched her back. Amelia sighed. “Um…Please” she said, stepping back from the table. She looked up at the gallery as she excited the OR, seeing Owen’ hair flash as he left.
“Hey” she heard Owen running up behind her. She was ambling down the hall, on her way to pick up her belongings. Owen placed his hand on her back, sending shivers down her spine. She had to fight the urge to stop and fall asleep in his arms. “Owen don’t”
“What?”
“Maybe eight hours was too long okay” he followed her into the locker room. He sighed, watching her pulling her things together. “Amelia… maybe just pull up a stool every now and then?”
She pouted, rubbing her face tiredly. She leaned against the door frame and closed her eyes as Owen packed his stuff. “Everything’s just happening so fast” She said, eyes still closed. Owen pulled his bag over his head and stood, watching her leaning heavily against the door frame, bobbing forward slightly as she fought exhaustion. “Let’s go home” he whispered, brushing her cheek with his fingertip. She opened her eyes slowly, delving into his. “Hold me” she said, unmoving from her spot at the door. He smiled, head lulling to the side. “Come on then” he smirked, cupping her shoulders and allowing her to fall weightily into him.
She sighed loudly, leaning against him. She breathed deeply, “You smell so good” she mumbled. He chuckled, kissing the top of her head, “So do you… now let’s get home.” She groaned, letting him drag her into the hall.
“Owen, what the hell is this?” She stood, clad in one of his t shirts and a pair of his trousers.
“If you mean the bean bag chair, then… Riggs wanted to get rid of it and I said we’d have it” he said from the bedroom. She folded her arms, looking down at it, confusion contorting her face. “O, Why?” he came in and stood behind her, hands resting on her shoulders. She leaned against him. “I had one as a kid, they’re so comfortable”
“You were a kid Owen”
“This one’s big.” She laughed, pulling his hands to her stomach.
“Yeah, I see that!”
“Hey, try it, You’ll see” she looked up at him.
“If I get down there, I will never get up Owen”
“If you sit on it, and don’t find it comfortable, I’ll throw it away” He turned her around and pushed on her shoulders. She laughed, allowing him to guide her down.
“Well?” He said, watching her relax into the giant beanbag.
“Damn Owen” She sighed, closing her eyes. He laughed.
“It’s good?”
“So good” she sighed again, one hand smoothing slowly over her stomach. “We keep” she said, opening her eyes. “Okay now help me up, or I’ll stay here all night” she reached up for him.
“Hmmm… What will you do for me in return?”
“Owen…” she opened and closed her hands.
“Alright,…” he said, pulling her up, “You can’t say I’m not a great husband”
“Never” she said, and pulled him down for a kiss. “I’m going to bed” she said, muffled by his lips.
“”No way. I am too, damn we’re alike” she shook her head, taking his hand and pulling him to their bedroom.
“We should get married” she said. She climbed into bed and flopped against the pillows.
“We should have a baby” He said, climbing in after her. She grinned, fiddling with her wedding ring. He looked to her ring animatedly. “Oh my…” he laughed, pulling her hand to his face, kissing her ring. He moved his hand under the covers, slipping his palm under her shirt.
“Oh my, all in one night!” he laughed, pulling her across the mattress, tight against him. She laughed, eyes drooping shut. He kissed her softly, the corner of her lips, and her neck. She moaned. “O…”
“Mmnnn”
“I want to… but… I’m so tired” he kissed her gently, tenderly.
“S’okay, Sleep” he said, smoothing his hand along her spine. He watched her fidget a little before settling, with a long sigh. He traced small circles against her stomach, until she began to breathe deep and even.
First of all I want to dedicate this fic to @jae-mi0829; I hope this makes you feel better about not being able to watch the episode life on Thursday :)
This fic I found between my old notes as well, but it got a little longer than it was supposed to. @magicalpostface; the title though ;)
The first time I saw him was nothing special. There were no sparks, fireworks, a flame lighting up my heart or any other fire for that matter. It was so trivial that I can't even exactly remember when I actually saw him for the first time. He was just a surgeon who worked in a great hospital and I was just a silly little sister visiting her brother and bringing in an awesome tumor. I can't even say that I thought he looked handsome or interesting, because, to be honest, all my eyes were on my older brother's best friend.
He was married at the time, that I do know, to the best friend of my brother’s love. It would have been strange, to most doctors, how everyone seemed to be connected to one another in that hospital, but to me, as soon to be neurosurgeon of Oceanside Wellness Group - even if I didn't know it yet - and already familiar with the whole practice, it was just life. The people who know me know that my entire life and everything and everyone connected to it is like a popular drama series.
The next time we met was just as trivial, but I do remember the lines on his face and his sad expression that indicated that his marriage wasn't going so great anymore. Yet again, I was too focused on other things to really care about the kind trauma surgeon who worked on the ground floor. After Erica's surgery I went back to LA, my mind full of worries about my best friends Charlotte and Cooper and about if Erica would survive or not. So back in Addison’s house, I didn't think twice about anything I had seen in Seattle Grace.
I went through the worst years of my life. I relapsed and my fiancée died. Like that wasn't bad enough, after I came back from Rehab I found out that I was pregnant and didn't even get a week to get excited about that; I got the news that my baby was going to die. After everything was over and I was once again left with nothing but losses, I started liking the new Trauma surgeon. But it still wasn't him; it was James. I'm pretty sure I was never actually in love with him; I think I was more in love with the idea of being in love with him. The normality.
He was nice, kind and perfect – except for the fact that he was a republican – so of course I could do nothing but accept when he asked me to marry him and I decided to make another trip to Seattle. I was scared and nervous about my marriage with James. I had been convinced that normality was what I wanted and I tried to be normal by acting like it, but when I was put on the test with my niece and nephew, I caved. I realized that you can’t just act normal and assume that you are, because I’m not normal – I don’t know if I ever was. I like to think that I was once, before my entire life was put in a blender without a lid, but at least I hope one day I can be again.
I went back to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital during my visit and helped Derek with the case of conjoined twins he was working on and slowly climbed up the ladder that was my brother’s respect for my work. I showed him I could be just as good as him, though I stayed in his shadow. After all, he was the amazing neurosurgeon they all knew and loved and I was just the newbie sister they knew nothing about.
Anyway I realized it might be better to start my life anew in Seattle. I knew I could never start over; people don’t just forget their demons or leave them behind, but I felt like being around the people in Seattle, who had a lot of problems of their own, might help me more than staying with my friends in LA, who had all started their life. They had managed to return their lives to normal.
I saw him around the hospital a few times. I knew his marriage was over and that Cristina had moved to Switzerland; Meredith was constantly video chatting with her. But I wasn’t looking for a relationship nor had I time to think of anything but my career, meetings or my family. Until one day this woman came into the hospital I knew from my AA meetings. She broke all rules of Alcoholics Anonymous and told everyone who could hear her about what had happened to Ryan. He stood up for me; not at first, but in the end he seemed to understand and we talked. I realized then that he was lonely; he seemed to have no one; his ex-wife was gone, his one friend was killed in a plane crash and the other was gone to DC most of the time. I also realized that I didn’t really know him. He was like I described before; the compassionate trauma surgeon who worked on the ground floor. We had worked on trauma’s before, but barely, seeing as there hadn’t been many trauma’s since my arrive there.
A month or two later I told him about my baby. I don’t know what had come over me, but it was getting too much to hold in. Especially that day. But besides that I felt safe around him and when I looked into his eyes – really looked at him – for the first time, I felt a difference from before. I felt a connection and I couldn’t deny that there was something I hadn’t seen before. There was this spark in his eyes that I loved; his eyes showed that he too had gone through something bad, but he had this wisdom around him that made him calm and collected. When he had taken my hand, it had felt so soft and warm and I had the strangest of feelings that a piece of a puzzle had just fallen into place. Like our hands were made to hold one another.
The next weeks I was once again preoccupied with work. I spend weeks planning out every detail of Dr. Herman’s brain surgery and trying to teach the interns and residents how things happened in the neuro department. But during the times I did see him around the hospital, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him.
One day he stepped up to me and asked about Dr. Herman’s surgery. He told me she had been flirting with him. Normally I would have straight out asked if he was into me, but after all that had happened I turned into an awkward blob with no self-confidence. I had lost my game entirely. So for some reason I found myself knocking at his door with a bottle of limewater. But again there was something in his eyes that I couldn’t quite understand. To me it always had seems so intense, like he was looking into my soul and when he said he was going to kiss me his eyes seemed to sparkle with wonder. That kiss was like nothing I had ever experienced before; it was soft yet passionate and again another puzzle piece seemed to fall into place.
I was head over heels. I couldn’t stop thinking about him and it terrified me; I didn’t want to get hurt again and I didn’t want my work – especially Dr. Herman – to suffer because of it. So I ran and hid away behind the walls I was building up once again. But still I couldn’t stop looking at him from across the hall or ER. The only time I seemed to forget about him was when I was talking to an enormous crowd about the brain-sucking tumor I was about to dissect, so that became my new way of turning off the lust I felt for him, the need to be with him lessened when I had to focus and when my heart was beating too fast because of the fear of failing in front of all those people to be able to start beating faster at the sight of Owen’s eyes.
When the surgery came around it was one of the hardest days in my career. I felt like a failure, I felt like a twelve year old again that needed her brother’s help to open a mayonnaise jar, I felt so horrible and all I could think about was wishing I was anywhere but near to this woman’s brain. Luckily Richard, who had become a great friend, had been there to help me focus along with Edwards and Meredith. When I was finishing up with the seeds, I heard him scream through the intercom when I took of my gloves. I was too focused on achieving my goal to think about it, but later on I realized he had cared for me and had been scared of me getting sick. To be honest I only just now realized that, because after the surgery I had been so scared that she wouldn’t wake up that I went over every minute of the surgery to check if I didn’t do anything wrong, but never thought about those words as anything but a part of the moment I might have killed a brilliant baby surgeon. All I could think about were the babies she wouldn’t be able to safe and doctors she wouldn’t train because of me.
After Nicole had woken up everything went back to normal, but I didn’t have a reason to avoid him anymore so I started spending more time in the ER to see if any people were in need of a neuro consults. I had been so busy planning the tumor removal that I hadn’t planned any patients for afterwards, so I needed to find a brain to cut in myself. The more time I spent in the ER the more I noticed that he was watching me almost just as much as I was watching him. I started craving the times we looked each other in the eyes, because seriously, it was the closest I had gotten to sex in a long time. I had never thought a look would be just as satisfying, but the passion that seemed to flow over between us was just so intense that I felt like my heart was going to explode. But I was still an awkward mess and someone really needed to teach me the rules of the game again, because I had no idea how to play anymore.
But then one special girl called this hospital, a girl that would change my life for the better. Some might argue that this girl had nothing to do with what happened between me and Owen after her mother’s surgery and I’d like to believe we would’ve gotten together eventually anyway, but still this little girl had a special place in my heart. It was the first time we had hugged and if I had thought the looks were electric, I’m sure lighting bolts would have destroyed an entire village when our bodies were pressed so closely to one another.
How we ended up in the on-call room was a mystery to me; all I know is that I couldn’t let go of him and the next second my body was on fire. Owen insists that we got into that on-call room, because I dragged him there and started kissing him so intensely that he couldn’t escape even if he wanted to. But I have this vague memory of him touching my hair and looking me in the eyes before he kissed me right there in the hallway, so it’s still a question for both of us. Anyway we couldn’t get enough of one another. Lying in that on-call room bed with him looking at me like I was his everything did more to me than any sex could’ve ever done. Which was good, because we didn’t exactly get to the sex part. A few minutes later we both got paged and when we got together afterwards it soon became clear that we were never going to be able to hook up in the hospital.
But the next day we got to that point in his trailer. Our entire journey had been so much waiting around that actually getting there felt like a miracle. I realized then how much this man had taken over my world. And I told my brother as much the next day; I was falling for Owen Hunt – hard. But things seemed to crash soon after, literally. A plane crashed on the ground and even though I had gotten over my demons from earlier and realized I wanted to be with him, things form his past surfaced again, making him question what he could handle. Later that day my brother died. Derek, the guy that had been there for me my entire life – the only constancy I had left, the guy that had saved my life multiple times, was gone and I didn’t even had the chance to say goodbye. We drifted apart even more. The glances I once craved so badly I tried to ignore and I looked away, because I was scared of breaking apart if I would see his eyes again. I was scared that he would realize how bad I was doing, partially because I couldn’t feel the pain; I didn’t want to, but also because I didn’t want to realize how bad I was doing myself.
I acted fine, I joked, I worked and I seemed perfectly normal. It was my way of dealing with his death; I acted like I was already over it. When he was gone to Iraq I felt more alone than ever. I realize I pushed him away and that I didn’t want to talk to him, but knowing he was right there in the ER was comforting in a way I couldn’t believe possible. So when he was gone, Stefanie was all I still had left. I like Stefanie, we had gotten almost as close as Richard and Bailey. I really understand now why they seemed to care so much for one another. Bailey and Richard both had this respect for one another that didn’t make one or the other superior, but made them equals. Stefanie has a lot to learn, before she’ll become a true neuro surgeon, but she has so much potential and she has such a strong mind that I’m sure she’ll be able to handle anything one day.
One year later I snapped. I had been holding it in so well, hid my pain and stuffed it all down and run from it – Owen’s words, not mine - but that moment I snapped. I yelled at Richard right in front of Owen. That’s just my luck; I snapped the exact moment Owen came back rom Iraq. Later that evening things were so horrible that I almost did drugs again, but he showed up and he saved my life. I’m sure that if I had taken those drugs in that moment, it would’ve killed me, maybe not exactly that day, but I know I wouldn’t have been able to stop. I would’ve spiraled down the drain and never would I have been able to actually live again, but even though I was hurting so much I could feel it in my teeth, I felt at home again when he put his arms around me.
After that night I felt better than I had in a really long time. Owen had taken me inside and we had lain on the couch all night. The next day Owen returned to the hospital and once again those glances and stares started lighting up my heart. I did realize though, that he might still hadn’t changed his mind about us being together; after all I was still a hurricane. So even though he helped me get over the drugs and later on was with me when I listened to Derek’s last voicemail to Meredith, I still didn’t dare hope that he wanted to be more than just friends and I had to make do with taking his hand. When I did though, when I did take his hand, a déjà vu from over two years ago when he took my hand in the chapel swarmed my mind and reminded me once again of the connection we both seemed to share.
It took us a little over three months to finally get back to getter. He kissed me first on the porch after he dropped me off like a couple of teenagers who walk home from school together. But I’m sure that if Maggie ‘cockblock’ Pierce hadn’t been there, things would have gotten more mature soon. I still had no idea what was going on though; I was so confused by it all and once again the fear of getting hurt sparked up. Until he cornered me in the elevator so we could… you know… talk.
Finally we were together together, if you know what I mean. I felt like I had never been happier. Of course Perfect Pretty Penny I Killed Your Brother Blake showed up, reminding me that I can’t be happy for more than one week. He, of course, stayed calm and collected. He helped me feel better by once again putting his arms around me, but also by telling me more about himself. I realized that I wasn’t the only mess in this relationship and I liked that. I love Owen with all my heart and hearing him talk about his passed made me love him even more. He had been to war, but he had also fought many battles in Seattle, yet he managed to stay in control. I could learn a lot from him. I love him.
Finally! After two months of writers block, I managed to start writing an Owelia fic again. It's kind of melancholic, but I plan on making it really hot in the end with a lot of feels. Thanks to greyscharmed for the boost I needed.
