Being an actor meant pretending.

That was the whole purpose.

Pretending to fall in love.

Pretending to cry.

Pretending someone breaking your heart didn't actually hurt.

It was all part of the job, part of whatever the script said.

You'd gotten good at it.

Too good.

Which was probably why no one noticed the difference between reality and acting.

Except Owen.

— "You always do that."

You looked up from your script which you had been reading over and over again, somehow, it didn't seem to stick. — "What?" He nodded toward the cup of tea in your hand.

— "You stir it even after the sugar's dissolved. It's like you're on another planet and have no idea what’s going on around you"

Who even had sugar in their tea anyways.

You scoffed, — "Maybe I just like stirring it"

— "Sure" To prove his point, he reached over and gently took the cup from your hands.

The spoon clinked against the side three more times before he pulled it away, all because of your intensive stirring just moments earlier.

— "...Okay, maybe I stirred it a little too much." You admitted.

A smile tugged at his lips. — "Told you."

You rolled your eyes, taking the tea back. — "Congratulations, you proved that I am a distant mob."

— "I know." He sounded entirely too proud of himself.

Working with Owen was... Easy. Embarrassingly easy.

There was never that awkward stage where you had to figure each other out.

Conversation came naturally ever since the chemistry read.

Silence never felt uncomfortable. Even filming the romantic scenes wasn't nearly as terrifying as you'd expected.

Which was ironic.

Because those should've been the hardest.

They would've been with anyone else.

Instead they were the easiest.

— "Cut!" The director clapped his hands together. "Perfect."

You stepped away from Owen with a relieved laugh.

— "I swear that scene gets more awkward every take."

— "It doesn't." He shook his head. "They're cute"

You looked at him.

— "The characters, they're cute together." He blurted out—almost in panic.

You laughed.

Yeah, the characters.

A month into filming, people started talking.

Not tabloids. Not yet.

The crew.

They exchanged knowing looks whenever you and Owen wandered off together between scenes.

Someone joked that craft services should start setting a place for two.

The makeup artists started asking where he'd disappeared whenever they couldn't find him.

— "He was with y/n five minutes ago."

That made sense. Apparently.

You didn't think much of it. Until your cast interviews started.

— "So..."The interviewer smiled."You and Owen seem pretty close."

Your heart skipped. Just once. — "We spend a lot of time together."

— "Would you say he's your favorite person on set?"

You laughed. "I feel like everyone else is going to hate me if I answer that, it's a weird question."

"So that's a yes?" You looked off camera—where Owen was standing.

Watching.

Grinning.

— "...Maybe."

The clip went viral.

Of course it did.

Fans loved finding tiny moments to obsess over.

The way you smiled.

The way Owen laughed in the background.

The way neither of you denied anything.

You tried not to read the comments.

You really did.

But curiosity won.

They're definitely together.

No they're just friends.

You locked your phone. Your face felt warm.

These people didn't know either of you. —"You've been quiet." Owen's voice broke through your thoughts.

You blinked. — "Hm?"

— "Oh." You smiled sheepishly. "Sorry."

— "You okay?"

There it was.

That look.

The one that somehow always made you feel seen.

You hesitated.

Then sighed. —"Have you seen... everything?"

He didn't ask what you meant. He already knew. "The edits and stuff?" His accent was clear.

— "The comments." You stated.

— "The thirty-seven TikToks your sister sent me?"

A laugh escaped you. — "Thirty-seven?"

— "Thirty-eight now."

You covered your face. — "Oh my God, sorry.. she is, ehum.. embarassing"

— "It's kind of impressive, actually. I like her."

Your heart dropped, — "Owen."

— "What?" He frowned.

— "You don't think it's weird?"

He tilted his head. — "What?"

— "People..." You searched for the right words. "...wanting us together."

He didn't answer immediately. Instead he looked down at the bottle of water in his hands. Turning it slowly. — "I don't know."

His voice was quiet. "I've thought about it."

Your stomach flipped. — "You have?"

He nodded once.

— "A lot, actually."

You forgot how to breathe. For a second. Maybe two.

Owen finally looked back at you. — "I just didn't think you had."

The words settled between you. Gentle. Honest. You laughed softly.

Mostly because if you didn't, you thought your heart might explode.

— "I've been trying very hard not to."

— "Why?" He raised an eyebrow.

— "Because we work together."

— "Yeah okay that's fair."

— "And because if you didn't feel the same..."You shrugged. "It would've made everything weird."

Owen smiled. — "I think we'd survive."

— "You do?"

— "Mhm." He took one small step closer, nodding. "So..."

— "So?"

— "Wanna make the internet accidentally right?.. or.. are you not in the mood"

You stared at him. Then laughed. A real laugh this time. — "You really just said that."

— "I did."

— "That was your grand confession?"

— "I had a better one."

— "Oh?" You smiled.

— "I forgot it."

You shook your head. — "Incredible."

— "I've been thinking about it for months!"

You laughed, really laughed, just like you had earlier at set.

Only this time...

He had no idea that you never had watched star wars and only pretended like you had because somehow, your heart started to feel some type of affection towards him.

It was silly really, not at all like you.

After some time you left the restaurant, catching yourself almost, almost grabbing his hand.

It almost felt uneasy, how quickly he got you to relax around him, as if he cast a spell over you.

You threw your bag on the hallway floor, your jacket following shortly after as you stepped out of your shoes, walking with quick and steady steps straight into your room.

Not even bothering to say hi back to your mother who was busy washing vegetables in the kitchen.

Always had, always would.

You had moved countries a lot throughout your life, it was part of your dads work and your mother really didn’t care. He got in lots of money for the family, and that was all that she could care about.

It was horrible, you absolutely hated it.

Not because anyone had been rude to you.

Quite the opposite, actually. Everyone had been polite.

Too polite.

The kind of polite that kept conversations short and smiles awkward.

The kind that reminded you that you didn't belong here yet.

You adjusted the strap of your bag as you walked through the crowded hallway, keeping your eyes fixed on the floor.

The chatter around you blended into a dull hum, familiar words spoken in unfamiliar accents.
