You were sitting in a couch backstage, waiting for the interviewer to welcome you onto stage. Your leg was bouncing anxiously but Owen was calm, scrolling on his phone like it was nothing, but of course, he was used to doing interviews after all, you weren't.
You had been invited to a new talkshow called "I love you" the show was based around interviewing celebrity couples. It was usually all fun and games and mostly to get the audience to laugh.
Ever since you and Owen hard launched your relationship on instagram a few months ago you had been the number one celebrity couple that fans spoke about, and you got payed quite a lot for participating in the interview since they were aware that it was going to attract viewers. It wasn’t like you needed the money, but the fans really wanted to see you together on screen since the both of you were very private with your relationship on social media, rarely posting anything together.
— "And now, please make some noise for Owen Cooper and y/n y/l/n!" The interviewer exclaimed and the audience erupted into applause.
Owen took your hand and squeezed it gently, just to show that he was there, that you were doing this together. — "Let's just do this, yeah?" He said, and his accent was thick.
You nodded and ran a hand through your hair before you stepped on stage.
There were two armchairs and a slightly larger sofa on the stage next to the interviewer's chair. You and Owen each took your seats in an armchair while the interviewer welcomed you. — "So, Owen and y/n, how are you both feeling being here?" She begun asking.
She was a middle aged woman with bleached hair and blue eyes, dressed in a red skirt and a black tight t-shirt with a pearl necklace which probably seemed more expensive than it actually was.
Owen took the lead and answered the first few questions, just so that you could warm up a little bit and not be as tense. He knew the feelings of being interviewed for the first time, the constant thought replaying over and over again.
"What if I said something wrong?"
However it didn't take long before you also were participating, answering the interviewers questions and making the audience laugh. At first, the questions were quite superficial, but the longer it went on, the more she delved into your private life. — "But you've been together for what? Seven months now?" She begun and Owen nodded. "Do you remember your first impressions of eachother? How did you meet?"
Owen threw a quick glance at you to see if you wanted to answer before he spoke — "We actually took drama classes together, so yeah we've known eachother for a while" he announced.
You smiled, — "Yeah, and then Owen asked me out on a random tuesday night" Owen shook his head, laughing. — "And we went on a romantic date at subway" The audience errupted into laughter. But it was true, you were planning to eat there at your anniversary, just for the fun of it.
The interviewer nodded but couldn't help but laugh herself. — "Well that's very romantic, do you remember what your first expressions of eachother were?"
— "Oh fuck, she's bloody beautiful" Owen joked and once again the audience laughed.
You shook your head dramatically, — "Yeah you did not think that" Owen smiled at you, his eyes flicked with something softer, love perhaps. — "You don’t know that." He winked, shifting in his chair just a little bit.
— "Okay and who made the first move? I know you said Owen asked you out but was there anything before that? Subtle flirting maybe that confirmed you both were interested?" The questions got more and more detailed as time passed, but maybe that was the whole point of long talk shows.
You thought for a moment before answering. — "I mean, I remember like maybe at the very start of dating or whatever Owen wrote me these like, I don't know, I think poems." You begun, and Owen immediately covered his face, blushing of embarassment. You couldn't help but laugh mid sentence when you noticed, "It was like.. love confessions. Yeah I thought it was really cute"
The audience listened, some whistled and some applauded. The interviewer gave you a smile, — "Well that is very cute indeed"
Owen nodded, — "Yeah but uhm," he begun, a finger in the air. "Did you think I wrote those?" He was trying his best not to laugh. You frowned, — "You didn’t?" You asked, a smile playing on your lips.
He couldn't help but burst out in laughter, — "Nah that's Shakespeare that" he added and the audience erupted into laughter, the whole room, and you were sure that fans were going to make memes of it in the future.
Your jaw dropped, — "What!" Laughter slipped out, you were in absolute shock. Owen nodded, licking his lips as he leaned back against the armchair. — "Nah that's Shakespeare that" he repeated, his accent clear, a big grin on his face.
— "Why you've never told me that!" You exclaimed. Owen laughed, — "I didn’t think I had to, it's common knowledge. You’re supposed to know that's Shakespeare. You tilted your head to the side in disappointment, even though a big smile was displayed on your face. — "You've got to be kidding me"
Owen shook his head, — "No come on y/n, it's common knowledge." You rolled your eyes at his teasing comments, but yeah, it was common knowledge.
The end.

Who the fuck dresses a child like they're a gulag prisoner?! honestly, this looks like a scene from One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.
And you KNOW that some stylist from Netflix is like yes, this is EXACTLY what teenagers these days think is hip and cool, I am so good at my job.
I'd love a breakdown of the acting in the 3rd episode of Adolescence if you ever feel inclined, maybe the moments that hit the strongest? I thought the actor did well in going from one emotion to another and when he raises his voice to exert power over the therapist
Sure! Yes, Owen does a really great job in shifting emotions throughout the episode and slowly showing Jamie's darker side without being theatrical even when he's explosive.
What I really enjoyed is at the beginning when he's having, considering the circumstances, a relatively good time talking to Briony and they're having their sort of banter because it does seem like he's a generally and genuinely a witty, funny kid but I think you can also tell that he's negging her, which, you know, the term is from The Rules of the Game, which isn't a book that I've read but has been described as a catalyst for incels so even when he's kind of being a happy-go-lucky kid, I think Owen imbues something lightly sinister to how he's talking with Briony
while also showing a childlike delight in having an easygoing, fun conversation with someone
I also quite like the yawn now that I know that it wasn't intentional, Owen was genuinely tired and he yawned and Erin Doherty just went with it and ad-libbed her response
and Owen laughs and he's kind of giggly because he also didn't expect that ad-lib
but Erin continues with her lines and so you see in a few seconds how Owen locks back into the scene, and gets back into the character
and it works for the entire dynamic between the two of them because I would not have guessed that that was what we were watching and it's a testament I think that he recovered so quickly.
When he does stand up and says, "What was that? Hey?"
he kind of mimics Stephen Graham's intonation and body language, which kind of showcases how he tries to model himself after different male role models, which includes his dad who he's very protective of and who isn't a bad guy but has harmful habits that Jamie's picked up on, so I thought was really well done.
And he's also good at facial expressions, derision
sadness
irritation/defensiveness
I also think when he panics and lashes out when Briony says that they aren't going to see each other anymore is really well done, the "Do you like me?" and "Tell my dad I'm alright"
because there is a raw vulnerability there but he puts that in his performance after such a vile confession, which was also done really well because it's performed as beseeching, like even though the underlying message of his confession about how he felt is "that bitch deserved it" he doesn't play it with that kind of sinister tilt and he doesn't play it as emotionless and logical, he plays it as, if you just understand, if you just understand from my point of view, which is really chilling.
As for Erin Doherty, it's harder to discuss her even though she does so much because everything is so subtle with her, you can't get in screenshots but she was such a great scene partner and like I said, she does so much with her material because she's meant to be an impartial ear there to make an assessment but you see how she slowly shifts throughout their hour together with her tone especially, like when she comes back in after her first outburst, she's curt
and her expressions change infinitesimally, because she doesn't show too much emotion because she's not meant to sway Jamie in any kind of way but for the audience (and sometimes for Jamie because he's bright and observant) we can see a very slight eye roll or sigh, we can she how she watches him, hopeful for any kind of sign so there can be mitigating factors to his crime
and then her realization when Jamie speaks about how he could've molested Katie's body but didn't and that makes him better, the disappointment and disgust and shock is communicated with a furrow of her eyebrow
or a very slight pursing of her lips and then the sort of release she has to do once he's left
is such a great performance.
