Yo, I was wondering what your recording set up for the bright sessions/ars paradoxica was? are you in a studio or have you created something at home? Also have you got any tips for getting started in sound design? Really love your work, Oliver.
I have a home studio rig, and luckily my closet is big enough and I have enough couch cushions in my apartment to be able to convert it into a makeshift iso booth. Most of my home recording is done in there, on my personal AT2035 condenser mic, through my Scarlett 18i20, and into Pro Tools 12.
A lot of my aP recordings happen by remote, where we try to mimic those conditions as much as possible. The cast all have similar microphones to me (AT2020s), and @kdimerc has a pretty sweet recording booth setup of her own in NY.
Most of The Bright Sessions is recorded by Lauren, in her bedroom, onto two Sennheiser shotgun mics, through her Scarlett and into Adobe Audition. If the episode doesn’t have more than two people in a scene at any one time, she’ll record it all herself, edit it, and then send it to me for sound design; more than that, and we need my Scarlett which has 8 mic pres. All this said, we’ve rented a studio for the final two episodes of Season 3 and we’re trying a radically different setup. It’s very exciting, but I don’t want to say too much about it yet. Hopefully we’ll have pictures of the whole process to share soon!
Tips? Uh... I’m just kinda winging it, friend. I’m in dangerously uncharted territory becoming a household name for audio drama podcasts. I guess today I would say, always be listening for new tools and techniques you can bring home with you. I’m so pumped to be trying this new thing for the Bright Sessions finale, and I can’t wait to integrate that process into more shows I do down the road. I’m always picking up little bits for my ever-expanding tool belt, so never tune out or think you know everything. Learn from the other people doing it, synthesize that, and go.
